Spring Open House 

Celebrate the season in downtown Burlington with the Spring Open House on Saturday, April 8. There will be great new merchandise and specials at your favorite shops. You can also enter to win one of five chances at $100 in Downtown Dollars at 16 participating businesses:
Earth Day Clean Up 

Participants of all ages are invited to come out for the 17th annual Earth Day Clean Up on Saturday, April 22. Volunteers can register at the Port of Burlington beginning at 8:30 AM to get t-shirts, trash bags and gloves. After going out to pick up litter throughout the community, they return to the Port for a free lunch, music, door prizes, and a group photo. Individuals, families, businesses, church groups, and organizations are all encouraged to lend a hand in caring for our piece of earth. For more information, call Tabetha Gerdner at 319-753-8151.

Commercial Space Open House

To assist downtown property owners, the DPI Business Development Committee is hosting a special Commercial Space Open House on Sunday, April 23 from 1 to 3 PM. It is free and open to the public. People interested in relocating, expanding, or opening a business in downtown Burlington will be able to visit available spaces and discuss the commercial opportunities. Stop by the lobby of the Burlington Apartments during the event to pick up a directory map to the available locations, as well as information about incentives, business support activities, and recent and future downtown projects.  
Spring Sip, Taste & Stroll

After a long winter, what could be better than strolling with friends and sampling beverages and food downtown? The Spring Sip, Taste & Stroll is a Downtown Partners fundraiser and takes place on Friday, April 28 from 5 to 8 PM. Join your friends and sample offerings from various wineries, distributors, and brewers at downtown businesses.

Discounted advance tickets are $15 at The Iowa Store or Weird Harold's. Tickets are $20 during the event at registration, located at the Iowa Store and at 518 Jefferson. A complimentary glass is included while supplies last. The event is open to those 21 or older. Downtown Open 4 Business Competition

With Main Street Iowa and the Iowa Economic Development Authority, Downtown Partners presents the Open 4 Business competition for either a new or expanding for-profit business locating in the Main Street district. Each of the state's 52 Main Street organizations can submit one business concept. Three local applicants will pitch their business concepts to Downtown Partners, with the winner receiving a rental assistance grant if they open in downtown Burlington. In addition, they will go on to one of five regional competitions in June for a chance at $8000. The five finalists will present their ideas in a statewide contest in August
for an additional $20,000 in funding.

The Latest News...
  • A big thanks to the hosts for yesterday's Upstairs Downtown Tour: Brandy Swartz and Eric Lee, Mike and Todd Darnall, Kevin Kuckelman, Caleb Geisel, Bob Brueck, and Janet McCannon. We greatly appreciate their hospitality and the excitement they are generating with their fantastic upper story residences! 
  • Thanks also to Jerry Johnson, Janine Clover, and Florence Paterno of the DPI Business Development Committee for organizing the first Downtown Coffee & Conversation, and to The Beancounter for hosting. We like promoting the sense of unity among downtown businesses. The next Coffee & Conversation is tentatively scheduled for June 28; details will be in next month's Update. 
  •   Work continues on the DPI owned building 300 Washington, aka the Typewriter Shop. Myers Construction is wrapping up repairs on the worst of three failing roof trusses (yes, we found one more); this project is supported in part by the State Historical Society of Iowa, Historic Resource Development Program. On April 21, student volunteers from BHS will clean out the basement and first floor. Brockway will be putting a new roof on the building this spring.  
  • The Jefferson St. Farmers Market begins on May 4 in the 300 - 500 blocks of Jefferson from 4:30 to 7:30! Be watching for new vendors and new activities. Sincere appreciation to Two Rivers Bank & Trust for their support of this great downtown event.
  • A sure sign of spring - the monthly Jefferson St. cruise nights begin on April 21!
