Representing Your Colleagues: A Guidebook for Members of CMA’s House of Delegates
WHAT IS HOUSE OF DELEGATES  (HOD)

Membership: CMA’s House of Delegates convenes annually to debate on the most important issues affecting members, the Association, and the practice of medicine.

The 500+ elected by members of component medical societies, specialty societies, and CMA sections and forums, represent virtually every mode of practice and region of the state.

Component societies are grouped into geographic districts [SCMA & MLCMS are in District X.] The size of the 'House' decreases and increases in relation to our membership numbers.

Purpose: The purpose of the HOD is to discuss major issues as determined by the Committee of Delegation Chairs which are confirmed by the Board of Trustees. The major issues reflect what is important to members and pertinent for the year (legislatively or socially relevant.)

Major issues are assigned to Councils / Subcommittees, the expert body. Prior to the Council’s report, the major issue topics are posted in an online forum on the HOD portal. Members offer feedback to the Councils on the direction of the report and focus of study. They have multiple digital opportunities to discuss the topics, the reports and offer amendments.

Amendments are changes to the recommendations put forth by the Council (it can be changes to part of the language, a total substitution, rejection or addition to the Council proposal). Members have the chance to offer early amendments prior to the House and in person, during the House.

The House (which includes all Districts and their representatives) will debate and vote on amendments.

Another component of the House and the major issues are the educational speakers. These speakers are experts in their field and on the topic. As of recently, House has been a CME activity due to the inclusion of educational sessions.

Additionally, the House is the body that also elects our president-elect and our Speaker and Vice Speaker of the House. They are the body that is able to approve Bylaws changes and issues charters (for example when component societies wish to merge).
