Cobb's newest book, Confessions, is now available on Amazon. The book begins, "This confession is by a disciple of Jesus......I am a disciple of Jesus because I find his teachings the best guide both for my personal life and also for responding to historical events." He invited me to write the concluding chapter as well as an appendix, which is the guidelines for Earth Crisis Support Groups. These support groups, somewhat like the small gatherings in the early house church movement, are a place for you to; 1. Share personally about how you are feeling during our planetary crisis. 2. Share the truth of what is happening in the world and, 3. Have a PARTY with food, where everyone can explore ideas of how we might respond creatively to the terrifying current events TOGETHER as we sing, dance and celebrate.
Today, at the begining of Holy Week, many of us remember Mary Magdalene who anointed Jesus. He defended her against her critics and said, "She has done what she could. She has anointed my body and is preparing it for burial. The truth is, wherever the Good News is proclaimed throughout the world, what she has done will be told in her memory.”
(Gospel of Mark 14) Jesus was not alone. Mary Magdalene was with him as she anointed him, as they celebrated Passover, as well as on Good Friday and the crucifixion, on Holy Saturday and the descent into hell and for Easter and the resurrection.
We are also anointed in love that is stronger than suffering and death as we celebrate Easter. This is the story of Christianity. Many betrayed Jesus, yes, but not everyone. As we hear the drum beats of war that, '"kill millions, harm billions and loots trillions," we need other people to share our anxieties and fears. It is too painful for anyone to face the horrors of this historic time alone.
And we do not have to be alone. Join us this Easter.
