Exploring climate and justice from Brooklyn to the Adirondacks’ Timbuctoo

After securing $2.1 million from last year’s state budget, Paul Hai, associate director of the Adirondack Ecological Center and others from ESF began creating a curriculum for the Timbuctoo Climate Science and Careers Summer Institute. This summer, the Institute will host 48 high school students to learn about the environment, science, and justice.

Annual commemoration service honors SU community members who died this year

The ESF and Syracuse University communities gathered at Hendricks Chapel for the annual Service of Commemoration to celebrate the lives of the 85 members of the ESF and SU communities who have died over the past year with President Joanie Mahoney among those offering reflections.

Belowground Biomass and Root: Shoot Ratios of Three Willow Cultivars at Two Sites, a recently published paper by Nathan J. Sleight, Dr. Timothy Volk, and Mark Eisenbies in the Department of Sustainable Resources Management examines this issue in willow biomass crops across two sites with three different cultivars.

Join 2022 Exemplary Researcher Dr. Jonathan Cohen's presentation on  “The Challenge of Recovering Early Successional Endangered Species” as part of the Adaptive Peaks seminar series.

Dr. Cohen, associate professor in the Department of Environmental Biology (EB), focuses his research on the conservation and management of birds and wildlife, primarily imperiled species. He is distinguished in his field of wildlife biology and conservation, with more than 70 peer-review papers and more than $3.5 million in research funding. He is an outstanding mentor to his many graduate students and has been influential in enhancing the EB graduate program.

The Exemplary Researcher Award is a college-level award recognizing successful, currently active researchers with exemplary research activity, publication record, and a graduate/undergraduate student mentorship program.

Screening of Powerlands Offered by CNPE

The Center for Native Peoples and the Environment (CNPE) invites the campus community to watch environmental stories about Indigenous Peoples, land, and culture. This month, they will screen “Powerlands,” a personal and political journey across three continents in which a young Navajo filmmaker investigates the displacement of Indigenous people and devastation of the environment caused by the same chemical companies that have exploited the land where she was born.

The sweetest weekend of the year is here! Take a trip to ESF’s Heiberg Memorial Forest for Maple Weekend.

March 25 and 26 I 9 a.m.-3 p.m. I Heiberg Memorial Forest

Activities include interpretive hikes, sugarhouse tours, and maple-themed interpretive stations. 



Bring your jars to be filled with hot, fresh maple syrup for $10/pint and $20/quart. Cash or check only. Jars must be clean, glass, and have a canning jar-style lid. No plastic containers of any kind will be accepted.

Get a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Syracuse Crunch

The ESF community is invited to join the ESF Alumni Association for a behind-the-scenes of the OnCenter War Memorial tour and take in a Syracuse Crunch hockey game!

You will have the chance to tour the Syracuse Crunch facility and learn more about the sustainability efforts and environmental aspects of the arena. The tour includes the locker room, gym area, and video room.

Discounted tickets for the game are purchased directly through the Syracuse Crunch ticketing site. Seats are in Section 107; $20 each.

Two Great Groups Join Forces to Create a Sustainable Future

Next year, the Mighty Oaks Student Assembly’s (MOSA) SustainabiliTEAM and Green Campus Initiative (GCI) will be combining forces to create a new organization. If you are passionate about sustainability and interested in what you can do on campus, check them out at their organizational meeting!

During the meeting, they will finalize what this new group will look like, and they are looking for more student input. Organizers are also hoping to find their new executive board. If you would like to be among the next group of student sustainability leaders, be sure to attend.
