Dr. Kate Anderson Foley Inspires Local Superintendents with Vision for Equity in Education

Early last month, Dr. Kate Anderson Foley delivered an inspiring address to the Greater Cleveland Superintendents' Association at the Union Club of Cleveland. The event, part of GCSSA’s In-Service calendar for the 2024-25 school year, drew dozens of local educators eager to learn from her distinguished career in education and equity.

Widely respected for her pioneering efforts in breaking down barriers for marginalized students, Dr. Foley began her career as a special education teacher, where she championed inclusive practices. Her passion for equity grew as she advanced, eventually serving as the Assistant Superintendent for the Illinois State Board of Education. There, she managed services for over 852 school districts and nonpublic institutions, bringing about transformative legislative reforms. One of her significant contributions was to the development of Illinois’ equity-based school funding model, a system that has become a beacon for other states. Additionally, her expertise was crucial in shaping the Every Student Succeeds Act, where her insights into equitable education helped redefine policies at a national level.

Dr. Foley’s address to the Greater Cleveland superintendents focused on her career-long mission to transform deficit-based systems into equity-focused organizations. She shared valuable strategies for bringing about systemic change, offering both inspiration and practical tools for those in attendance. Her influence, she noted, extends across educational institutions, federal and state agencies, and nonprofits—testament to her ability to reshape the landscape of education through an equity lens.

Local leaders left the event inspired, recognizing the importance of continued work toward equity and inclusion in their schools. Dr. Foley’s expertise and passion resonated deeply, solidifying her reputation as a thought leader and catalyst for change in educational systems nationwide.

The discussion covered six key generations: the GI Generation, Silent Generation, Boomer Generation, Gen X, Millennial Generation, and Generation Z.
