Train Smart:
How to Protect Yourself From the Heat While Training

Dr. Cohen enters his 31st season as the podiatric consultant to the Philadelphia Eagles.  As training camp is getting into full swing and with fall sports being right around the corner, here are some tips to help with training in the heat.

        • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate- even try to snack on hydrating foods such as carrots, cucumbers, berries, and cantaloupe.
        • Know the signs of heat exhaustion, know your body, and know when to STOP.
        • Skip the pre-workout supplements, sugary drinks, and alcohol.
        • Run for time instead of distance.
        • Chill a bandana or towel to wrap around your neck.
        • Cool off in the water, even give aqua jogging a try.

Shoe Picks

Dr. Cohen's Comfort Pick of the Season goes to the Brooks Levitate.  This shoe is stylish, lightweight, and has phenomenal shock absorption.  If you have orthotics, they will also fit nicely into this shoe.

Other notable picks are  the New Balance 890V6, the Brooks Ravenna 9, the Saucony Liberty ISO, and the Brooks Ghost 11.

Athlete of the Month
Kathleen Rubin,  Triathlete

Our athlete of the month is Kathleen Rubin.  Kathleen is an outstanding triathlete who competed in the Women's Philadelphia Triathlon this month.  She completed a 400m swim, 9 mile bike ride, and 5k run.  Kathleen was able to finish 35th out of 139 women in her age division wearing her secret weapon.  For those of you who aren't familiar, our secret weapon is our custom made sports orthotics.  Congrats Kathleen!
