Dr. Michael Barnes: Leading the Future of Education in Ohio as BASA’s newest President

Dr. Michael Barnes, Superintendent of Mayfield City Schools, has dedicated over three decades to public education. Now, in his fourth year as superintendent and more than 20 years within the Mayfield district, Barnes is taking on an even larger role in shaping the future of Ohio’s education system. Recently elected as the president of the Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA), he is bringing his experience, passion, and leadership to advocate for students, educators, and the future of public education.

A Vision for Leadership

In discussing his goals as BASA president, Dr. Barnes outlined three key pillars that will drive his tenure:

  1. Advocating for All Children – Ensuring every student, regardless of background or circumstance, has access to quality education and opportunities for success.
  2. Empowering Staff Through Professional Development – Supporting teachers, administrators, and school staff with the resources and training necessary to grow and excel in their roles.
  3. Collaborating for the Future of Public EducationPartnering with educators, policymakers, and community members to strengthen and sustain public education in Ohio.

For Barnes, leadership is about service. “I’ve always felt this calling to serve,” he said. Encouraged by a supportive Mayfield school board, he embraced the opportunity to extend his leadership beyond his district to impact education statewide.

The Importance of Education as a Calling

Barnes recognizes the challenges facing the education profession, particularly staffing shortages and the perception of undervaluation. However, he remains steadfast in his belief that education is one of the most impactful careers. “Kids make up only 30% of our population, but they are 100% of our future,” he emphasized. His goal is to remind educators at all levels—from teachers to bus drivers to custodians—that they play a crucial role in shaping not just students but society itself.

Building a Stronger School Community

At Mayfield, Barnes is committed to fostering a culture of recognition and appreciation. He believes that visible leadership and direct engagement with staff are essential. “It’s important to be out there, be visible, and have those conversations,” he shared. To reinforce this culture, Mayfield moved its board meetings to an earlier time to allow for the celebration of students and staff achievements. Additionally, regular employee engagement surveys provide a platform for feedback and continuous improvement.

A New Chapter: Author and Thought Leader

Beyond his work in district leadership and statewide advocacy, Barnes recently published a book, The Modern Superintendent: A Guide to Instructional Leadership. The book reflects his insights and experiences, offering guidance to fellow administrators navigating the evolving landscape of education.

A Future Focused on Collaboration

As he embarks on his tenure as BASA president, Barnes remains dedicated to fostering collaboration among education professionals across Ohio. “We must remind people just how important their work is,” he stated. By prioritizing advocacy, professional development, and strategic partnerships, he aims to ensure that public education continues to thrive for generations to come.

With a heart for service and a clear vision for the future, Dr. Barnes is poised to make a lasting impact—not only in Mayfield but also across the entire state of Ohio.
