Breaking Barriers in Allergy

and Asthma Care

A Focus on Black Communities

TOP OF MIND

This year, once again, must confront a harsh truth: I apologize for the role I have played in contributing deeply to one of the worst healthcare systems in the world. The stats are sobering. Life expectancy in the U.S. is just 79.25 years—ranking 40th globally and lagging far behind other wealthy nations. Despite spending nearly 18% of our GDP on health care (more than any other wealthy nation), we still rank last in key outcomes like life expectancy and preventable deaths. Why? Administrative red tape, fragmented care, inequities, and preventable factors like obesity, poor diets, and substance abuse are taking a devastating toll. If we fail to act, these issues could cost the U.S. four years of life expectancy gains by 2050 and result in over 12 million preventable deaths. This isn’t just a health crisis—it’s a system that prioritizes profits over people.

The disparities are even more alarming for Black Americans. Life expectancy for Black Americans is nearly five years shorter than for White Americans (72.8 vs. 77.5 years), the infant mortality rate is more than double (10.6 vs. 4.4 per 1,000), and pregnancy-related deaths are nearly three times higher (39.9 vs. 14.1 per 100,000 live births). These stark inequities are rooted in centuries of systemic racism and pseudoscience, perpetuating false ideas about biological racial differences. Shockingly, a 2016 study revealed that many White medical students and residents still believe harmful myths, such as Black people having thicker skin or faster blood clotting. These biases continue to seep into medical education, tools, and practices, fueling ongoing inequities in care.

Next year could bring even more challenges with leadership changes at HHS, Medicare/Medicaid, and the FDA. The CDC has already been asked to scale back its public communication. But here’s the good news: the African American Wellness Project will not stand down.

Stay Healthy,

Dr. Mike

COVID-19 VACCINE HESITANCY AMONG BLACK WOMEN IN THE US

In a qualitative study, 3 main themes emerged as being associated with vaccine hesitancy: mistrust in health care and government, concerns over vaccine safety and long-term effects, and ineffective and coercive vaccine communication and promotion. Participants expressed deep-rooted skepticism stemming from past medical exploitation, fears about rapid vaccine development, and frustration with inadequate and coercive vaccine messaging.

HOW TO STOCK YOUR MEDICINE CABINET

A well-stocked medicine cabinet is essential for managing minor health concerns and emergencies at home. From monitoring vital signs with a thermometer, blood pressure monitor, and pulse oximeter to maintaining air quality with a humidifier and oxygen cylinder, these tools can help you stay prepared. Essentials like masks, a body weight scale, and a properly equipped first aid kit ensure you can respond quickly to common health needs. While some medications may be prescribed by your doctor, it’s important to focus on practical supplies rather than unnecessary over-the-counter remedies like cough medicine or antibiotics.

ALLERGY AND ASTHMA NETWORK UPCOMING WEBINAR

Join Allergy & Asthma Network for their next free webinar all about ‘The Microbiome and Its Role in Asthma & Allergies

 🗓️ February 25, 2025 | 4 PM ET

Discover how the diverse community of microorganisms in our bodies influences respiratory health and immune responses. The microbiome, particularly the gut microbiome, plays a significant role in the development and progression of asthma and allergies, with research indicating that an imbalance in the microbial composition (dysbiosis) can contribute to increased allergic responses and airway inflammation, potentially through its influence on the immune system development early in life.
