The Panther Post
Monday, July 25, 2022
DPHS Community Member,

I am so excited to return home to Dr. Phillips high School! I began my educational career as a social studies teacher at Dr. Phillips High School. The first 16 years as a Panther, I served as Athletic Director, Dean and Assistant Principal along with coaching softball and cross country teams. I had the opportunity to serve Freedom High School for 3 years and then returned home to DP in 2012 as the Assistant Principal for Instruction. From 2015 through 2022 I had the pleasure of working with the Chain of Lakes, Westridge and Carver communities before returning as your principal. As the parent of a recent graduate, athlete and magnet student, I have a vested interest in the success of all programs at Dr. Phillips High School.

My overarching goals for this upcoming school year are: 1) making sure that each student is given the best possible academic opportunities from August 10, 2022 through May 26, 2023; and 2) that both campus security and health & safety remain top priorities every school day. We have some incredible educators serving at DP, but we will also be continuously on guard to make sure students, staff, and guests are protected in a healthy learning environment.

We are running this abbreviated Panther Post issue to help our Panthers prepare for the upcoming school year which begins on Wednesday, August 10th. This week we are distributing devices for students each day depending upon grade level (please see the schedule below). Our annual back to school freshmen and new student orientation plus campus tour will be given on Wednesday, August 3 at 10:00 a.m. and then at 4:30 p.m. As the first day of school gets closer, we will publish another summer edition with the latest information and other goals for the 2022-2023 school year. In the meantime, please visit our website and social media sites for ongoing updates.

I look forward to partnering with you this year as your student grows and flourishes as a Panther. Enjoy this final week of July and thank you for reading!

DeSantis signs bill to expand opportunities for Bright Futures Scholarship
Under the new bill, work hours count toward the scholarship’s community-service requirements.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday, June 27, signed H.B. 461 to expand eligibility requirements for the Bright Futures Scholarship Program to include paid work experience as a substitute for service hours.

This expansion will allow students who work after-school jobs to apply their paid work contributions to their communities to substitute service-hour requirements.

The legislation allows students the opportunity to receive Bright Futures Scholarships who may not otherwise have been able to meet the requirements for a scholarship.
