DPHS Community Member,
This past week we welcomed back our teachers and they are already halfway through their annual pre-planning period. We have been reviewing goals for 2023-2024, training together, and generally getting everything in order preparing for our Panthers return on Thursday morning.
We know many of our students have already looked at their schedules as this issue goes to print, but I highly encourage each student to look at them again later in the afternoon or evening on August 9th as it is very possible that your classes have changed. Your English teacher will provide information about schedule changes, but remember that schedule changes are only made for these scenarios:
1. Your schedule has a hole in it (you are missing one or more classes).
2. Your schedule has a DUPLICATE class (example- you have two Spanish 1 classes).
3. Your schedule has a class that you have already taken and passed (example- you already took HOPE over the summer through FLVS but your schedule has you taking HOPE this year).
4. You are requesting to be moved to an AP level course.
5. You are missing a required course for a magnet program that isn't on your schedule.
6. You are missing a required core class.
- If your dual enrollment classes are not listed on your schedule, please send an email to Ms. Morrow.
- We cannot accommodate requests to change electives
- We cannot accommodate requests to change teachers.
- We cannot accommodate requests to change lunch periods.

Pictured very top: Some of our very own water polo Panthers competed for 4 days in Dallas this summer at the The USA Water Polo Junior Olympics and brought home the GOLD for their amazing performance! Congratulations to our 16u champs (Coach Leo Leon-Ramirez, Natalya Speller, Vivi Kasten, Maran Harris, Nicola Mazewski, and Avery Haugh who was named MVP of the tournament) and to our 18u champ (Nicole Speller).
Excerpt from the Orlando Sentinel article by J.C. Carnahan:
Orlando water polo teams scored historic wins in a USA Water Polo Junior Olympics tournament in Dallas over the weekend.
Team Orlando 16U, a combination of players that included girls on the Greater Orlando Aquatic Team and Seminole Aquatics clubs, went 7-0 over four days of play. The roster had five girls from Lake Mary and five from Dr. Phillips as well as Sanford Seminole sophomore Halle Zimlich, who made the Sentinel All-Area team as a ninth-grader.
DP’s Avery Haugh was named tournament MVP. The other DP girls were Maran Harris, Victoria Kasten, Nicola Mazewski and Natalya Speller, an incoming freshman who starts high school next week.
Here is some more info on what these amazing water polo athletes achieved! The USA Water Polo Junior Olympic Championships is the largest age group water polo tournament in the Nation. Athletes and teams come from across the country to compete on the national stage. Teams had to qualify through their particular zone. The Championship Division is an elite tournament with the top teams from each zone qualifying. This division will offer big courses, longer quarters and a competitive National Championship atmosphere.
WAY TO GO PANTHERS! Awww DP!

New Cell Phone Policy for Students
|
|
|
A student may possess a cell phone on Board property, on school transportation and at school activities, provided that during school hours, the cell phone is silenced and concealed. Pursuant to Section 1006.07, Florida Statutes, “a student may not use a wireless communications device during instructional time, except when expressly directed by a teacher solely for educational purposes. A teacher shall designate an area for wireless communications devices during instructional time.” For purposes of this section, the designated area will be in the student’s backpack, or purse, except when expressly directed by a teacher solely for educational purposes. Violations of the cell phone policy will be handled in accordance with the Code and may result in confiscation of said device. If the cell phone is used in a criminal act (such as sexting as outlined in Florida Statutes and the Code), the cell phone will be provided to law enforcement and the student may face criminal penalties. The use of wireless communication devices are always prohibited during the school day (from the first morning bell to dismissal) unless expressly directed by a teacher solely for educational purposes. Wireless communication devices include but are not limited to, cell phones and/or auxiliary/ancillary devices such as watches and ear buds.
At no time shall OCPS be responsible for theft, loss or damage to cell phones or other electronic devices brought onto its property.
These standards apply to all students in the public schools of Orange County.
|
|
On September 5, 2023 the following progressive actions will be taken if a student violates OCPS’ cell phone policy.
● Confiscation (returned to the student at the end of the day)
● Detention
● Positive Alternative to School Suspension (PASS)
● Out-of-School Suspension (OSS)
Note: During the school day, if a parent needs to contact their child or a child needs to contact their parent, schools will make allowances for them to do so. A student would be called from class to an office, as you would if a parent was to come to the school to speak to their child or the child will be sent to an office if they need to make the call to the parent. Students should be directed to the nearest office. Students may use their personal cell phone to contact a parent as long as they are in a designated office.

Classroom Expectations, Tardies, and Attendance
Students, please remember that you are not allowed to leave your classroom in the first or last 10 minutes of every class period.
Students, your job here at school is to attend class and succeed in your studies and extracurriculars. Please make sure you are arriving to ALL of your classes on time and are attending each of your classes throughout the day, every day. Poor attendance, skipping and tardiness can and will have a negative impact on your grade. If you are absent for a doctor's visit or anything else that warrants an excused absence, please make sure to submit a signed note to the front attendance office as soon as possible once you return to school. If you have 5 unexcused absences in a calendar month or 10 in 90 days you are considered truant and can lead to school and legal consequences (driver license revoked, for example).
Student Safety: Arrivals and Dismissals
Panther Parents and student drivers, please remember that there is only ONE lane to turn right into the student parking lot and student drop off lanes. Please do not cut off other cars or attempt to turn right from the center lane. This not only can cause an accident but endangers yourself, the other drivers around you and anyone walking in the immediate area. As a reminder you should also NEVER be dropping your students off ON Turkey Lake Rd. This is extremely dangerous, especially in the dark mornings and could cause you or your student to be harmed if other cars do not anticipate your stop or see your student. The only place your student can be dropped off is in the drop off lane on DPHS campus. Remember, arriving early means your student can be dropped off quicker and safer. Please plan accordingly especially in the first few weeks of school.

New Digital Testing Format
|
|
|
The College Board is transitioning the SAT Suite of Assessments (PSAT 8/9, PSAT National Merit Qualifying Test (NMSQT), and SAT) from a paper-based format to a digital computer-adaptive format beginning with the Fall 2023 administration of the PSAT 8/9 and the PSAT NMSQT. The SAT School Day test will be paper-based for the Fall 2023 administration. The Spring 2024 administration of the SAT School Day will move to the new digital format.
To ensure access for all students, those who are unable to access computer-based assessments due to a condition or disability may have this accommodation met through the College Board’s Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) approval process. Please see https://accommodations.collegeboard.org/ for more information and check with your guidance counselor if you have any questions!

New Student Orientation
Highlights from July 27th
|
|
|
On Thursday, July 27th Dr. Phillips hosted our annual new student orientation for incoming freshmen and all new transfer students. PTSA, our magnet programs, sports and many of our clubs had booths that new students and their family could visit! New students also received their computers and were able to tour the campus. Student council also hosted one of their most popular events, a Panther Pop Up sale!
A huge thank you to everyone who came out and all the staff and returning students who helped make the event a success. And thank you to Principal Ramsey, Assistant Principal Nguyen and the Dr. Phillips yearbook staff for all these great shots!

Panther Spotlight
Vrajesh Patel, Center for International Studies
|
|
|
Center for International Studies Junior, Vrajesh Patel, was selected as a Rotary Short Term Exchange candidate to travel to Spain and stay with a Spanish family he was matched with over the summer. He says, "visiting other countries through an exchange gives a deeper understanding of the people and history of a place that you can't get through a tourism program. You get to know the everyday routines of foreigners, practice the language, make home cooked meals, and share stories and conversations with your host family and their family and friends."
Vraj continued to explain, "My host brother, Teo Buker, and I had a lot in common but we also shared a lot of differences. Through the two-month exchange, I got to attend school in Sevilla, Spain for three weeks and enjoy very old architecture and amazing food. Teo came and lived with my family and got to see firsthand how diverse America is. He learned about Indian culture as much as he did American culture. He also got a feel for high school life when he attended our back-to-school event."
Through exchange programs, both students become ambassadors for their country and develop a better understanding of one another, making a very big world, just a little bit smaller.
