The Panther Post
Monday, September 11, 2023
DPHS Community Member,

We will have testing this week on Sept. 12th (Biology/US History makeups) and then from Sept. 14th-19th (FAST ELA retakes for 11th & 12th). If this applies to you or your student, please be sure to get a good night's rest prior to the exams. We want to see all of our Panthers earn the scores they are capable of and sleep plus breakfast on the mornings of test day will give every student a positive edge.

For our college bound seniors or for any Panther will college aspirations in the future, September and October are busy months when it comes to both scholarship opportunities and on site college representative visits. Please be sure to read Mrs. Loftus Ewing's College and Career segment this week if this is applicable.

In this edition of The Panther Post is a special segment featuring our 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Smith, and our 2023-2024 Support Person of the Year, Mrs. Hobbs. I think the pictures below speak for themselves when it comes to their surprise, but please know these are major career achievements for both professionals. If over the coming days you come into contact with either Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Hobbs, kindly take a moment to congratulate them. They are tremendous assets supporting the students every school day, so a little recognition from members of our DP community would mean a great deal to both. Thank you very much.

As always, enjoy your week and thank you for reading.

DP Panthers—Never Less Than The Best

Jackie Ramsey
Principal
2023-2024 Teacher of the Year and
Support Person of the Year
A HUGE congratulations to this year's Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Smith, and Support Person of the Year, Mrs. Hobbs! Both of these ladies are instrumental in helping DP be Never Less Than The Best!

Mrs. Smith is a guidance counselor who, besides her normal set of students, works specifically with seniors who are at risk of not graduating. Mrs. Hobbs works the front desk of building 100 and is therefore the main point of contact for many staff and students, as well as our visitors and she does it all with cheerfulness and a huge smile.

TOY and SPOY is an annual OCPS tradition and is made more special because the nominations and final voting comes from the teachers and staff at the school itself.

MEAN GIRLS tickets went on sales last week:
SO FETCH!

The hilarious hit Broadway musical MEAN GIRLS comes to the DP stage this October. Presented by our Theatre VPA Magnet department, this production features a script by Tina Fey based on the 2004 Paramount Pictures Film. Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a queen bee without getting stung.

The musical will play October 5 – 8 and tickets will be on sale Tuesday, 9/5 at www.dphstheatre.com.

1) Seniors!! Many of you have asked for information on the Free and Reduced Lunch application that applies to fee waivers.

The new link/ site has just been posted to the main OCPS site which you can find using the link below:

2) Scholarships and Paying for College
Many times when I meet with students, they say "I need a scholarship to pay for college"- Let's correct that statement to what we actually need. I need assistance in paying for college! When we use the term "Scholarship" we limit all the other assistance that is out there such as:
● Financial Aid
● Grants
● Tuition Coverage
● Tuition Reimbursement
● Tuition Assistance

These are all ways to pay for college other than just receiving a scholarship. So, how badly do you want/need a scholarship?! Did you know there are several companies that offer tuition assistance/reimbursement to their employees?! Here is a list:
● Starbucks
● Amazon
● Disney
● Lowe's
● Target
● Walmart
● UPS
● FedEx
● Bank of America

It is possible to get college paid for, but maybe not in the way you have it planned out at this moment. Keep applying to private scholarships every day if you can, however, remember that the larger the scholarship odds are the less likely you will be to win it. Key word, WIN. Most private scholarships are like winning the lottery- so why not go after the Tuition Assistance that is guaranteed to you by working for these companies?! Take a moment to look up each company's tuition assistance plan!

3) Florida State University
Many of you have expressed interest in applying to Florida State University (FSU). FSU is one of the hardest schools to be accepted to in the entire country. With a 25% acceptance rate last year, they are becoming more and more competitive. So let's talk about FSU Admissions!! Lucky for you, FSU has an Early Action (EA) Deadline of October 15th that is only available to Florida residents. This means you have the rare opportunity to apply to FSU at an earlier time frame and receive an earlier decision. Last year, students who were not accepted from the EA deadline were rolled over to the regular decision application pool
This all means that if you plan on applying to FSU, apply by October 15th.
Are you a first-generation student who is Pell-grant eligible? Check out the FSU CARES program! I will send an additional email with more information about this program at a later time, but check out the link below to learn more about the FSU CARES Program:

If you would like more information on what can make you the best applicant or to see what type of student is accepted to FSU, check out the link below! Click me!

School Policies and Procedures
Morning Student Drop Offs
Panther parents and student drivers, please remember that there is only ONE lane to turn right into the student parking lot and student drop off lanes. Please do not cut off other cars or attempt to turn right from the center lane. This not only can cause an accident but endangers yourself, the other drivers around you and anyone walking in the immediate area. As a reminder you should also NEVER be dropping your students off ON Turkey Lake rd. This is extremely dangerous, especially in the dark mornings and could cause you or your student to be harmed if other cars do not anticipate your stop or see your student. The only place your student can be dropped off is in the drop off lane on DPHS campus. Remember, arriving early means your student can be dropped off quicker and safer. Please plan accordingly. Thank you.

Green Late Passes
Students that arrive after 7:20am will come through the front office (not the gate) and receive a green late pass to 1st period.

In the Classroom
Students, please remember that you are not allowed to leave your classroom in the first or last 10 minutes of every class period.

Attendance
Students, your job here at school is to attend class and succeed in your studies and extracurriculars. Please make sure you are arriving to ALL of your classes on time and are attending each of your classes throughout the day, every day. Poor attendance, skipping and tardiness can and will have a negative impact on your grade. If you are absent for a doctor's visit or anything else that warrants an excused absence, please make sure to submit a signed note to the front attendance office as soon as possible once you return to school. If you have 5 unexcused absences in a calendar month or 10 in 90 days, you are considered truant and which can lead to school and legal consequences (driver's license revoked for example).
Here are a few points to follow regarding Early Dismissal:

● If your student is ill, he/she must go to the Clinic. Our nurse, Mrs. Carrasquillo, will call you if your student needs to go home and will issue the appropriate dismissal paperwork and pass. Your child may not call you to pick them up for being sick unless he/she has been dismissed for the day by Mrs. Carrasquillo.
● When retrieving your student early for an appointment, upon their arrival back to school please have him/her place the doctor/dentist/therapist/attorney/court/DMV, etc. note in the Attendance Box located in the Front Office.
● If your student drives to school and he/she needs to leave, IN A TIMELY MANNER please send an email along with a copy of your state issued ID to: [email protected]

When being absent, the following ARE NOT excused:
● Car trouble
● Family vacations
● Family reunions
● Going out of town for a wedding
● Going out of town to take my sister/brother to college
● Had an appointment – to be excused you must state the appointment and provide the proper documentation such as doctor/dentist/therapist’s note, USCIS appointment request, DMV paperwork, etc.
● Personal reasons – to be excused something must be stated; for example, my mother is ill. We do not need a lengthy explanation but we do need a little more than just “personal reasons”.
● Family emergency – to be excused something must be stated; for example, my mother is ill. We do not need a lengthy explanation but we do need a little more than just “family emergency”.

As a reminder, when leaving school early for an appointment, please remember to bring the doctor/dentist/therapist, etc. note which they all provide as you leave their office. Kindly drop it off in the Attendance Box located in the Front Office.

Thank you!

I believe in Science, I believe in Arts, I believe in History, I believe that knowledge is a door to the brightest future possible. Here I'll add a quote from the most wonderful human in my life, my dear mother, "remember to be the best at anything you set yourself to be, if you are a doctor be the best doctor, if you are a janitor, be the best janitor, your position or your line of work doesn't determine who you are in life it's the GANAS you put into it."
