The Panther Post
Monday, April 1, 2024
DPHS Community Member,

As this is our first Panther Post edition since spring break, I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable week. We began the 2023-2024 4th quarter this past Monday and now have only eight weeks remaining in the school year.

Please be advised that on Tuesday, April 2 there will be testing for most of our students. All freshmen and sophomores will be taking the FAST Writing exam, while all juniors and select seniors will be taking the SAT. Due to the testing schedule, we will not have most of our normal classes. ALL students will report to their 3rd period, and we will dismiss to testing at 8 AM. After testing and both lunches conclude, we will have 5th period from 12:34-1:24 and 7th period from 1:30-2:20. This is subject to change as of course there is always the possibility of delays. All non testing seniors will report to the PAC.

* If you are freshman or sophomore who arrives after 8:45, you will report to the media center.

* If you are a junior or senior who arrives after 8:45, you will report to the PAC.

Please talk to your student about the importance of going to bed on time the night before a test, eating a good breakfast and of course coming to school on time! All testing students will need their school laptops, their chargers, and should bring snacks and drinks with them.

From March 12th to 16th, 32 cadets from Air Force JROTC departed on a 5-day field trip to Washington DC and New York City. They visited the White House, got a private tour of The Pentagon, felt the emotion of the 9-11 Memorial Museum, enjoyed the entertainment that is Times Square, and finished it off at the Arlington National Cemetery and the Library of Congress. All of them had a great time in spite of the long bus rides and packed 12-hour days!
Parents, if you have not yet completed our 2024 Family Survey, please take a few minutes to do so as we need at least a 20% response rate to help us with school improvement plans. Thank you for your support.

STUDENT VISIONARIES ARE THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW.
They look to the future—and see infinite possibilities.
They challenge the status quo—and make the impossible possible.
They boldly imagine a better world – and lead the charge to create it.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was built on that same vision - of a better world - one without blood cancers. And with the help of high school students across the country, our impact is stronger than ever - and growing.

Please help Sam Guilfoy as he competes to be the Student Visionary of the Year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, representing Dr. Phillips High School! Join his team and DONATE personally or ask about business sponsorship opportunities.

Grand finale is April 5th, so don’t delay! Let’s show the community how Panthers kick out Cancer!

Dr. Taylor Bousfield, DPHS Staffing Specialist, is this year's Student Visionary of the Year Campaign chair and can help direct questions to our DPHS candidate. Email [email protected] with any questions on how to get more involved!

Classroom Spotlight
While the Danish exchange students visited Universal, Kennedy Space Center and Crystal River, they also took the opportunity to share a part of their culture with students in Mr. Daye's ESE classroom.
Katrine, Villads and Oliver (from Denmark) hosted by 4-5 DP-CIS students sang songs, passed out Danish Licorice, shared photographs and maps, and even danced to Danish pop music. The Danish students said "everyone was so nice and excited to see us, it was a very warm welcome, and all the students in the class were so kind and sweet".

Thank you Mr. Daye for inviting us to visit and enriching our youth exchange experience for ALL students.
Special Recognition
Demi Markland
Demi Markland was awarded the Florida Theatrical Association Yost Scholarship for Technical Theatre. He was the only student in the state of Florida to win this $5,000 prize. In order to be considered, he had to pass a video pre-screen, and was then chosen from 57 in-person finalists who presented scholarship packages to a room of judges and college representatives.
Business Academy and DECA
Dr. Phillips DECA Members attend the Florida State Career Development Conference.
Members of the Dr. Phillips High School Chapter of Florida DECA joined 2700+ high school business, finance, hospitality and marketing students at the annual association career development conference held February 29-March 3 at the Hilton Lake Buena Vista in Orlando, Florida. As an integral part of the classroom curriculum, DECA’s industry-validated competitive events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism. DECA’s competitive events directly contribute to every student being college and career-ready when they graduate from high school.

More than 250 business professionals evaluated the members’ performance in the format of role-plays, case studies and prepared presentations. All competing members of the Dr. Phillips High School Chapter placed in the top 10% of their categories!
Special congratulations are in order for the following students that received the highest recognition of individual/team ability and achievement at the state association level:

* Evanthea Hainline and Shea Karesh, 1st Place, Business Solution Project Management

* A'mari Brown and Chloe Dewar, 4th Place, Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making

These students will advance to international level competition and compete against 16,000+ competitors from around the globe at the DECA International Career Development Conference held April 27-30, 2024, in Anaheim, CA.
---------------------
On February 13, 2024, SRE Marketing Students and DECA Members were invited to tour the Kia Arena and enjoy a Solar Bears hockey game. This experience enabled students to learn sports marketing firsthand. A tour of the arena, including meet and greets with the Director of Operations and Sales and Marketing, some concessions, and attendance at the game made for a great learning experience

The Importance of Daily Attendance
A reminder at the start of Quarter 4 . . .
Students, your job here at school is to attend class and succeed in your studies and extracurriculars. Please make sure you are arriving to ALL of your classes on time and are attending each of your classes throughout the day, every day. Poor attendance, skipping and tardiness can and will have a negative impact on your grade. If you are absent for a doctor's visit or anything else that warrants an excused absence, please make sure to submit a signed note to the front attendance office as soon as possible once you return to school. If you have 5 unexcused absences in a calendar month or 10 in 90 days you are considered truant and can lead to school and legal consequences (driver license revoked for example).

Panthers, please put forth your very best effort over these last eight weeks of 2023-2024. Take advantage of every instructional day possible.

"No matter how you feel, always get up, dress up, and show up,
but never give up."

Growth in chronic absenteeism within US K-12 schools:

Students can’t learn if they aren’t in school. And a rotating cast of absent classmates can negatively affect the achievement of even students who do show up, because teachers must slow down and adjust their approach to keep everyone on track.
~ The New York Times
Source: The New York Times, March 29, 2024

DP Community footnote: Nationally, an estimated 26 percent of public school students were considered chronically absent last school year, up from 15 percent before the pandemic, according to the most recent data, from 40 states and Washington, D.C., compiled by the American Enterprise Institute. Chronic absence is typically defined as missing at least 10 percent of the school year, or about 18 days, for any reason.
