DPHS Community Member,

Decisions. Decisions.

Off and on since we began the school year, I have reminded our community about the many varieties of high-end entertainment made available by DP at very nominal cost. The month of December brings this message to the fore as you, and your family, have some difficult entertainment decisions to make whether it be in the way of athletics or the performing arts. For instance, our boys basketball team opened the 2023-2024 season with an incredible start vs. formidable opposition while our award winning performing arts students have several exciting seasonal events occurring all within a few days. Most central Florida households, and businesses, are feeling the bite of inflation. Therefore, this holiday season if you are looking for real value delivered by some incredibly talented young adults, you are definitely at the right place.

I hope this Panther Post edition finds you having enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving and that your December is off to a great start. Thank you for reading.

Two dancers competed in solo competitions on Friday evening. Valeria Perez won 1st runner up for FDM Miss Teen and Andre Roche won the title of FDM Mr. Teen 2023.

A (kind of) Sad Love Story (Dec. 7-10):
The Theatre Magnet is proud to present the play A (kind of) Sad Love Story. After 7 years of having what seemed to be the perfect relationship Emily left Andrew. Andrew wasn’t sure why Emily did it. Emily wasn’t quite sure either. All she knew was that it needed to happen. As Andrew frantically works to find a way to fix his relationship, Emily tries to figure out why it was that she left him in the first place. A (kind of) a Sad Love Story is the bittersweet story of a stagnant relationship between two twenty-somethings who, in order to move on with their lives, must first break each other's heart.

'No Blankets Rule'
As we enter the winter season in central Florida, we will experience bouts of cold weather as we just did. A few students at DP have been wearing blankets as an alternative to hoodies and sweatshirts. We do have a rule which asks students to keep their blankets at home and opt to bundle up instead. This rule, like most that we have in place, boils down to a matter of student safety.

Please remind your student that due to being a fire and trip hazard, blankets are not allowed on school campus. A staff member will first give a warning to put away and not bring back. If the student refuses, the blanket will be stored in building 700 (Discipline Office) for students to pick up after school.

Campus safety is our #1 daily priority at DP and the No Blankets Rule supports this goal. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Rain Barrel Project
"DPHS Rain Barrels Supporting a Great Cause: Water Conservation"
We are excited to have double the interest this year in creating and designing not just one Rain Barrel for Orange County Utilities, but TWO Rain Barrels! As well as SIX beautifully rendered 2D Artworks supporting the water conservation cause! Please wish our Art Students good luck in this competition! We will know results of this competition during the Spring Semester.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The Orange County Utilities Water Division works with local schools every year to host a Water Conservation Calendar Contest. Students, working in groups of up to four per team, are challenged to create artwork on a rain barrel and 2D artwork to be considered for the calendar publication promoting the importance of water conservation in their daily routines. The winning artwork is featured in the Orange County Utilities Water Conservation Calendar. Selected winning entries will represent Orange County in the statewide American Water Works Association’s Drop Savers Calendar Contest.

HOW ARE AWARDS DETERMINED:
The winning artwork and the names of the students, schools, principals, and coordinating art instructors will be published in the 2024 Water Conservation Calendar. Student winners will receive a plaque for their winning artwork. Thirteen barrels will be selected as winners, and photos will be published in the 2024 Water Conservation Calendar. Winning artwork may also be posted to social media or highlighted in traditional media stories.

BASIS FOR JUDGING:
All painted barrels will be judged based on:
● Originality
● Artistic skill
● Creation of a positive water conservation message/slogan
● Suitability for reproduction in the calendar

Boys Basketball:
Orlando Sentinel (Nov. 29): Tip-Off Classic: DP upsets Mainland; Seminole-Boone goes OT by Buddy Collings
Second-year Dr. Phillips boys basketball coach Antonio Cunningham instructs players during a time out in the Panthers 58-57 victory against Mainland in a Wednesday night quarterfinal in the Rotary Tip-Off Classic at Winter Park High School. (Buddy Collings/Orlando Sentinel).

Excerpt from the Orlando Sentinel story by Buddy Collings:
After a dismal 2022-23 boys basketball record by Dr. Phillips standards, Panthers senior Kalleal “KJ” Jones believes his team is in for a “way better season” this time around.

Thanks to his last-second heroics on Wednesday night, DP is moving in that direction. Jones, a 6-foot-4 senior wing, made the winning shot to give his team a 58-57 victory against state-ranked Daytona Beach Mainland in the opening game of the Rotary Tip-Off Classic at Winter Park High School.

Mainland, No. 3 in SourceHoops’ Class 5A preseason rankings, rallied from down 56-49 in the final 80 seconds to go ahead 57-56 on a 3-pointer by junior guard Seven Simmons with 4.6 seconds to go.

Second-year DP coach Antonio Cunningham called a timeout and called Jones’ number. The Panthers (2-0) threw from the baseline long to Jones, who caught the ball outside the 3-point line on the right wing. Two defenders moved to trap but Jones used three dribbles to create just enough space for a 14-foot jumper that beat the buzzer and dealt Mainland (3-1) its first loss.

Dr. Phillips’ bench emptied as players ran onto the court in a celebration that looked as joyous as those seen after the many district and region championship victories.
