DPHS Community Member,

As this issue of The Panther Post is entering your email inboxes, the Dr. Phillips theater department is putting on their last performance of “Into the Woods.” Congratulations to all of our students, whether they were cast, crew, or orchestra for their spectacular performances!

The theater department would like to thank the community for coming out to support all of our shows.

A huge thank you to the Rotary Club of Dr. Phillips, a partner in education, for their $5,000 contribution to the theater department at Saturday's show of "Into the Woods"
There is no school this Monday, February 19 given the Presidents Day holiday. When classes resume Tuesday morning, we then have only 18 instructional days remaining in this third quarter. Please be sure you have reviewed your student's progress report with them which were made available last week via our online student information system—Skyward. In this issue we have posted our tutoring schedules for any of our Panthers needing additional support. Please take advantage of the tutoring opportunities sooner vs. later.

I hope this finds you enjoying the Presidents Day holiday and I look forward to seeing all of our Panthers back on campus Tuesday morning!

Rising senior meetings were this past week, rising junior meetings are from February 20-23, and rising sophomore meets are February 26- March 1. Students should be getting signatures from their classroom teachers and discussing classes they would like to take next year. Our course description catalog for the 2024-2025 school year has been updated on the Dr. Phillips website as well. If you are curious about a class offered please refer to this catalog.

Class selection meetings will be done through English class, and makeups will be decided once all meetings have occurred.

Annual Show Us Your Strength Photo Contest
WIN $2,500 FOR YOUR SCHOOL!

The Observer Media Group and Healthy West Orange once again are teaming up for our annual Show Us Your Strength contest.

We love seeing people doing good in our community. We love stories of compassion, of people lending hands, of people working together to make our community stronger. In fact, we love it so much that we’ve revamped our annual contest to find more of it!

In years past, this has been a photo contest open to all schools in West Orange and Southwest Orange. We received hundreds of submissions from sports teams, performing-arts groups and classrooms showing off their strength in all sorts of ways.

This year, we’re again searching for strength — but with a twist. We’re looking for your school’s champion. You know: the person or people who are always there to volunteer, to assist, to help out. These are the people who make your school better.
Entering is easy! Submit a photo of your superhero along with a short written entry (200 words or fewer) telling us why he or she is a champion for good in your school community.

Submissions will be accepted from Thursday, Jan. 18 through Monday, Mar. 25.

Then, come back to the contest site from Mar. 26 through Apr. 12 to vote.

Winning submission will be announced Thursday, Apr. 18, 2024.

For more information, call us at 407-656-2121 or email Editor and Publisher Michael Eng, meng@orangeobserver.com.

Panther Happenings Around Campus
Some of our CTE Digital Media/ Multimedia Foundations 1 and 2 students earned an industry certification as Adobe Certified Professionals in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Visual Design. This is a great accomplishment. Students have been preparing in class for the certification exam and receive a certificate once they pass the certification test. Over 51 Dr. Phillips High School Members competed in the District 4 Career Development Conference and Competition. The following student members have advanced to the State Career Development Conference and Competition held annually in Orlando, Florida. DECA’s industry-validated competitive events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism. DECA’s competition process allows students to compete in a written component such as an exam or report and an interactive component with an industry professional serving as a judge. DECA’s competitive events directly contribute to every student being college and career ready when they graduate from high school. These students are to be commended for their success.

Above and below: On February 13, 2024, SRE Marketing Students and DECA Members were invited to tour the Marriott Harbour Lake Vacation Ownership Resort. This experience enabled students to learn of the time share industry and inner workings of a resort property. A tour of the resort including meet and greets with the Director of Operations, General Manager, Human Resource Director, Housekeeping and Engineering Supervisors, and Recreation Activities Associate, a quick bite to eat, and a short round of mini golf allowed students to gain first-hand knowledge of resort operations and how owners (guests) can enjoy a relaxing vacation.

School Policy Reminders
Blankets Not Permitted
Please remind students that due to being a fire and trip hazard, blankets are not allowed on school campus. A staff member will first give a warning to put away and not bring back. If the student refuses, the blanket will be stored in building 700 (Discipline Office) for students to pick up after school.

Class Dismissal
Students, please remember that you are not allowed to leave your classroom in the first or last 10 minutes of every class period
Student Drop Offs
Panther parents and student drivers, please remember that there is only ONE lane to turn right into the student parking lot and student drop off lanes. Please do not cut off other cars or attempt to turn right from the center lane. This not only can cause an accident, but endangers yourself, the other drivers around you and anyone walking in the immediate area.

As a reminder, you should also NEVER be dropping your students off ON Turkey Lake Road. This is extremely dangerous, especially in the dark mornings and could cause you or your student to be harmed if other cars do not anticipate your stop or see your student. The only place your student can be dropped off is in the drop off lane on the DPHS campus. Please remember, arriving early means your student can be dropped off quicker and safer.
