The Panther Post
Monday, March 4, 2024
DPHS Community Member,

This week we will have a modified bell schedule Tuesday-Friday due to testing for PMA’s. Please see below for the full schedule.

Please also note that on Thursday, March 7th, we will have lunch based on 6th period classes. If your student has 6th period in buildings 100, 200, or 300 they will have B lunch. If not, they will have A lunch. Please make sure to review this information as going to the wrong lunch will result in lost instructional time.
DP families, our annual family survey will be available Monday, March 4. Please take a few minutes to complete using these quick steps:

1) Visit bit.ly/ocpsfamily and select a school name
2) Select the language in which the family would like to take the survey in
3) Complete one survey for each school that the family has a child attending
4) Press submit once completed
We greatly appreciate your help in providing feedback regarding our school once the 2024 family survey opens this Monday. We rely upon this annual survey for guidance with our continuing school improvement efforts. Please note that all survey responses are totally anonymous; we only see the combined results for Dr. Phillips High School, not any individual surveys.

Students, please remember that the deadline to apply to Orange Technical College is Thursday, March 14th.

Lastly, good luck to our Lady Panthers Basketball team as they are playing in the Class 7A Final 4 semifinal game on Friday, March 8th in Lakeland. Go Panthers!

Annual Show Us Your Strength Photo Contest
WIN $2,500 FOR YOUR SCHOOL!

The Observer Media Group and Healthy West Orange once again are teaming up for our annual Show Us Your Strength contest.

We love seeing people doing good in our community. We love stories of compassion, of people lending hands, of people working together to make our community stronger. In fact, we love it so much that we’ve revamped our annual contest to find more of it!

In years past, this has been a photo contest open to all schools in West Orange and Southwest Orange. We received hundreds of submissions from sports teams, performing-arts groups and classrooms showing off their strength in all sorts of ways.

This year, we’re again searching for strength — but with a twist. We’re looking for your school’s champion. You know: the person or people who are always there to volunteer, to assist, to help out. These are the people who make your school better.
Entering is easy! Submit a photo of your superhero along with a short written entry (200 words or fewer) telling us why he or she is a champion for good in your school community.

Submissions will be accepted from Thursday, Jan. 18 through Monday, Mar. 25.

Then, come back to the contest site from Mar. 26 through Apr. 12 to vote.

Winning submission will be announced Thursday, Apr. 18, 2024.

For more information, call us at 407-656-2121 or email Editor and Publisher Michael Eng, [email protected].

Art with Mrs. Callaway
On February 26th in Mrs. Callaway's 2nd period Painting Class, Ms. Judy Le, a public relations specialist from Our Legacy, a Donate Life organization that partnered with FusionFest back in November, visited our school to recognize our two DP artist winners. We got the chance to celebrate with them as they received their awards.

As mentioned in the February 5th Panther Post Community Brief, their works were displayed at the FusionFest back in November.

* FusionFest, Inc. is a nonprofit organization with the mission to celebrate the people and the many different cultures that make Central Florida awesome by showcasing talents, sharing stories, driving innovation, and building a community based on respect and understanding.

Frequent readers of the Panther Post will know that quite often we feature artwork from our amazing DP artists. Many times those students have Ms. Callaway as their teacher. Recently, she had the opportunity to sit down with Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost to speak with him and other leaders in arts and humanities in the Orlando area. This is what she had to say on the experience:

“On behalf of the Office of Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost representing Florida’s 10th Congressional District, I was honored to be invited to join Congressman Frost, and Chairwoman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Shelly Lowe to break bread with many local key players in our arts and humanities community. It was an awesome opportunity for all to gather, learn, and share thoughts and experiences from the amazing work happening regarding the arts, cultural recognition, and the humanities in our local communities.

I am still reflecting on this special gathering of great minds and the individuals I was honored to meet and talk with this past Monday evening. I plan to reach out to the contacts I made connections with to share and discuss ideas to continue to support our Visual Arts programs in our school district.

I am so grateful and honored for the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful gathering of community leaders supporting the arts, and preservation of culture and humanities in District 10.”
