The Panther Post
Monday, May 15, 2023
DPHS Community Member,

Attention all underclassmen! The time for your CFE’s has arrived! Please make sure you are checking your student email for information from Ms. DeNoon and administration all along. The modified daily bell schedules for this week are shown just below. Once again, on those evenings before your exams please make sure you are getting a good night’s sleep. On testing days, make very sure to bring your SCHOOL computer and charger with you, as well as snacks & drinks!
** Wednesday, May 17th is normal, short day **
Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week. The Kona Ice Truck was on campus Wednesday afternoon with treats for our wonderful educators. (Additional highlights at the end of this issue).
May 10th was School Nurse Appreciation Day. Our school nurse, Ms. Carrasquillo, has been doing an amazing job supporting our students! She is always ready and willing to help, and we appreciate her so much! Thank you for all you do, Ms. Carrasquillo!
Friday, May 12th was the last day of school for seniors. It began with a senior breakfast (above), which also included a FFA run fish fry! This special day concluded with a senior send off, sponsored by PTSA. (Additional images just below.)
In this mid month issue we continue with our Panther accolades and success stories. However, please note that this week we are running two special spirit weeks simultaneously as the school year is close to an end: Haitian Spirit Week and Asian American and Pacific Islander Spirit Week. Their daily themes are shown below and I hope all of our Panthers will participate.

Sunday, May 14th is Mother's Day in the U.S. (always the second Sunday of May). Mother’s Day is celebrated differently from family to family but the spirit of the day remains the same. We honor that person we call “mom” for being that special person in our lives that sticks with us through thick and thin. My best wishes to all for a Happy Mother’s Day!

An interview with one of our retiring Panthers!
How long have you been at DP?
23 years

How long have you been in education, and what was your first position?
I have taught for 42 years. My first teaching position was at a, then, brand new middle school in Council Bluffs, IA, Lewis Central Middle School. I taught seventh grade language arts.

What has been the greatest accomplishment of your career?
My greatest accomplishment has been to remain in education for 42 years and still find rewards in it every day. It has been a privilege to help shape the minds of so many young people and watch them grow. It is amazing to see them flourish from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. Even more amazing is seeing them from their freshman year the end of the senior year!
Lewis Central Middle School in Council Bluffs, Iowa where Ms. Simoff began her career as a teacher. The school was brand new at the time and she was teaching seventh grade language arts.
What will you miss most about DP?
I will miss so very many past and present students and the relationships we have built and sustained. I will miss the friendships I have made with so many of my wonderful colleagues. Students, faculty and staff have been the bright spots in so many of my days. I will miss the laughter, humor and smiles on the faces of all. They all truly embody our school motto, "Never Less Than the Best!" They have all helped to make me want to strive to be a better teacher even after all these years.

We are overjoyed about the news of Dr. Phillips High School Visual Art Students who were recognized for their incredible achievement of having their artwork selected as winners for Congressional District 10 in the 2023 Congressional Art Competition. We are so proud of our Panther Artists for their incredible achievements!!!

The winning entry from the district will be prominently displayed in the Cannon Tunnel in Washington, D.C. The Cannon Tunnel connects the Cannon House Office Building with the U.S. Capitol and is traveled on a daily basis by Members of Congress, their staff, and visitors.

"Over the past few weeks, our district office has had many guests, all who have witnessed the student’s work. Seeing their eyes light up and hearing their gasps of astonishment has been such a delight. Every single piece submitted has left their mark and has been nothing short of inspirational to our guests. Our celebration tomorrow is more than a commemoration of the work, it is a tribute to the impact that the student’s gifts will have both in the present and in the future."

DP Art Student Recognition - US Congressman Webster Visit
The results are in for the 2023 Congressional Art Competition for Congressman Daniel Webster, 11th Congressional District of Florida. We are completely overwhelmed with joy and excitement about the news of THREE Dr. Phillips High School Visual Art Students recognized for their incredible achievement of having their artwork selected as winners for Orange County and for Congressional District 11 in the 2023 Congressional Art Competition.

It was an incredible honor to have Congressman Daniel Webster himself, announce the awards to our students in person at Dr. Phillips High School on May 3rd, 2023. We are so proud of our amazing and talented students!!!

About the Competition
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.
"We are excited to extend an invitation to your high school students to participate in our 2023 Congressional Art Competition. Each spring, a nationwide high school art competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation, as well as in each Congressional District. Since its inception in 1982, high school students throughout the U.S. have been involved with the nationwide competition.

The Congressional Art Competition is a unique opportunity in which Congressman Webster is able to showcase the artistic talents of high school students within the 11th District of Florida. The winning entry from the district will be prominently displayed in the Cannon Tunnel in Washington, D.C. The Cannon Tunnel connects the Cannon House Office Building with the U.S. Capitol and is traveled on a daily basis by Members of Congress, their staff, and visitors.

This year, the theme for our office’s Congressional Art Competition is “Wonders of Florida”, and all artwork entries must adhere to this theme. The competition is open to students who reside or attend a high school in Florida’s 11th Congressional District."
