DPHS Community Member,
Thank you to all of our teachers, staff, and families for their support over these past few weeks with testing. We are looking forward to seeing the students' results soon, but the help from home plus from all of our faculty and staff working together, made this year's assessment period run smoothly.
Friday, May 26th will be our Class of 2023 commencement ceremony. The event will be held at 8:30 a.m. in the Amway Center. We are all very excited about this coming Friday morning to see all of our seniors and their families for what is going to be a very memorable day. Please note that we have included some important reminders about graduation in this edition. We will also be running our next issue of The Panther Post in June which will include highlights from the ceremony.

In this issue we have included a special segment on our incredible cafeteria team who have been here for our Panthers every school day since last August 10th. If the opportunity should arise this last week of school, please take a quick moment to thank them for their efforts in serving our students breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and suppers. This team also has a very important role when it comes to student achievement and they have done a marvelous job!

As for this week, I know everyone is looking forward to a well earned summer break, but please take advantage of these last five instructional days and remember the student of code of conduct. Enjoy the week and also remember to leave your backpacks/bookbags at home Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Make this a great last week of 2022-2023 Panthers!

Some of the unsung heroes of Dr. Phillips are our dedicated and hardworking cafeteria employees. Every day they provide breakfast, lunch and after school snacks to both campuses which includes over 3,000 hungry teenagers! In addition they also provide snacks for students during testing, which are always welcome and something students look forward to. Once again, a HUGE thank you to our cafeteria staff for all of their hard work every day, all year. You are awesome!

Retiring Panthers
Ms. Monge / Mr. Sciotto
Name: Leticia Monge (pictured above with her husband and grandbaby)
Position: Spanish Teacher
How long have you been at DP? I have been at Dr. Phillips High School 27 years.
How long have you been in education, and what was your first position? My mentor, Mr. Mikell, helped me get my first teaching position at Oak Ridge High School. I have been in education total of 33 years
What has been the greatest accomplishment of your career? My greatest accomplishment has been mastering the AP Spanish Literature curriculum and becoming the best AP Spanish Literature teacher that I could be. For twenty-six years my students have consistently scored at the top of all AP Literature classes in Orange county and the state. I have been so fortunate to share my passion for these literacy treasures with brilliant students, and together we helped so many other kids find their voice and realize their capacity for deep thought and analysis. This has been the most rewarding job anyone could have. Most of my students faced language and social barriers that prevented them from excelling in other subjects; yet, for 26 years my message was consistent, as I quoted Don Quijote (quote from the novel is just below).
Anything else to share? "I know who I am or who I may be, if I choose" ~ Miguel de Cervantes, Spanish Writer
Name: Mike Sciotto
Position: ELA 3
How long have you been at DP? Four and a half years
How long have you been in education, and what was your first position? 36 years and my first position was seventh grade ELA at St. Cloud Middle School in Osceola County
What has been the greatest accomplishment of your career? Being named to Who’s Who of America’s Teachers back in ’94 when I was in Kissimmee and getting midyear transferred to DP during the 2018-19 school year, going from sixth graders to seniors and watching my seniors walk across a stage at commencement while on the floor to see it.
What will you miss most about DP? Seeing the delayed reactions from staff members’ faces with my bad puns AKA Dad jokes.

College costs adjusted for inflation by school year:

Making sense of the charts for our Panthers:
The charts are adjusted for inflation which allows you to fairly compare college expenses from one year to the next for both public and private schools. If any of our DP seniors or for that matter, any student, has questions before the school year is over about college financial aid and other related post secondary issues, please stop by the College and Resource Career Center. This is a valuable asset available to our students and families.
