DPHS Community Member,
Hopefully this latest edition of The Panther Post finds you and your family have weathered the tropical storm well with no serious problems. I am looking forward to seeing all of our Panthers back on campus Monday morning as this will be our last five instructional days before the Thanksgiving Break (Nov. 21-25). We will let the community know as soon as possible what decision the district makes with respect to any make-up instructional time lost from this past week.

Panther Marching Band members after they just earned a SUPERIOR rating from the Florida School Music Association. The rating is comparable to the grade of “A” and reflects the finest conceivable performance for the event and class of participants being evaluated – worthy of the distinction of being recognized as among the very best. The scale goes: Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor.

This coming Thursday, November 17 we will have the students' Quarter 2 progress reports available online through the Skyward student information system. If you have not been visiting this site all along, I encourage you to do so this week. OCPS prepares very short "parent tech" videos on a variety of important topics to assist families and one of these specifically addresses the accessing of progress reports and report cards through our Skyward system - "Parent Tech Tip: Progress Reports & Report Cards" (< 2 min. video).

*** OCPS has also created an easy-to-follow "Monitoring Tips" webpage dedicated to helping families see how quick & easy it really is to use the system to monitor student progress all along. If you have a student at DP, you certainly owe it to yourself to visit this webpage when you have moment this week. Thank you very much. ***
There are several ways our parents can continuously help to boost or maintain student achievement and one of the leading ones is to visit Skyward once per week to view how their child is currently performing. Therefore, if this applies to your household, please stop by the Skyward site this coming Thursday to review the Quarter 2 progress report. If any student is not quite where they should be by this point in the 1st semester, please remember to take a look at the tutoring opportunities we list in every one of these Panther Post editions.
I hope our Panthers will make the most out of these last five days before the Thanksgiving break. Thank you for reading and welcome back!

Are you ready for a puzzle challenge? November 1st marked the start of our fall ChessKid "Kings and Queens of Puzzles Contest". Students are challenged to complete 100 puzzles correctly during the month of November. Prizes will be awarded to any student that meets the challenge! Make sure to log into your ChessKid account via LaunchPad to participate.

Student Driver's License:
Students must have a valid driver’s license and decal to drive to school and park on campus. Restrict driver’s licenses and or learning permits are not allowed.

This weekend holiday celebrations began at DP’s largest Partner in Education, Universal Studios. The celebration lasts through January 1st and features something for the whole family!

Please congratulate 3 DP artists who placed in the “Exhibit A: Family Court Art Challenge” and were honored at an awards ceremony on November 3rd. Junior Arden Yu took the 1st place spot across the high school competitors, freshman Elle Mangin took 3rd and junior Hannah Na received an honorable mention.

Center for International Studies
Calling all Panthers!
The holidays are just around the corner and CIS is collecting supplies which we will be shipping to children in Haiti. We are accepting school supplies, hygiene items, new clothing, and small toys. Any donation helps!

CIS: "Symposium Of The Unheard"
On November 2nd, CIS hosted an event called the "Symposium Of The Unheard", from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm in the South Campus Cafeteria. This event was to raise awareness about Marginalized Groups (by 9th graders), Civil Rights around the World (by 10th graders), Discrimination in America (by 11th graders) and finally Representation in the Media (by 12th graders).

The CIS students worked very hard on their presentations including music, light refreshments, and various interactive stations that made the evening enlightening and education. A CIS parent said "I found the students to be engaging, articulate, and genuinely passionate about the topics they shared. I really enjoyed the creative concepts they brought to the topics at hand, in particular the games. Spending the evening at your event and meeting the CIS students restored my faith in the future! When these kids grow up and lead, we’ll be in a much better place." |

On November 5th, Dr. Phillips Speech and Debate competed at Horizon High School. The team had an incredible time, including welcoming Deputy Superintendent Dr. Armbruster to Horizon to observe some debate rounds. In terms of placings, Megan McAvoy placed 1st overall in Congressional Debate taking the competition decisively. The team competes next November 30th. This past Monday night, the Dr. Phillips chapter of National Honor Society inducted its newest class of 84 junior and senior students. NHS selects members based on the four pillars of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Congratulations to all of our new members! |

Magnet Applications
OCPS Magnets offer the opportunity for students to discover their talents and explore their interests while focusing on academic rigor. High school magnets provide unique personalized learning communities. These programs of study are aimed at increasing student achievement and permit a student to focus on interest, talents or career goals.

Do you need community service hours for Bright Futures? Manicure Monday is every Monday after school from 2:30-3:30. Head to room 3-112 to help clean up the different areas around campus. You will receive one hour every day that you go. Make sure to submit a proposal to your guidance counselor first, and to bring your community service log form. We hope to see you there! |

Supply Drive
Hey Panthers! StuCo is hosting a Classroom Safety Drive in order to provide teachers with classroom supplies. We will be stationed outside of the Media Center from Wednesday the 9th to Friday the 18th with a bin for you to donate items such as hand sanitizer, Band-Aids, tissues, etc. Every donation helps!

Pet Drive:
The pet drive was a success! Student Council got numerous donations and is ready to send them to our local shelter, Orange County Animal Services. Over the course of a couple of weeks, students went down to the Media Center and handed in a variety of items, including treats, toys, food, and litter.

College Financial Aid
The number of DP Class of 2023 seniors completing the FAFSA through the end of October is ahead of the same time period last year. If you are planning on attending college in 2023, please be sure to get this paperwork completed as soon as possible. |

FAFSA is the Federal Application for Financial Aid! This application allows you to apply for the Pell Grant (up to $6,495) to use to pay for college that you do NOT have to pay back!! This application is required by MOST schools to complete in order to receive financial aid!

Support for Coach Staton
Evan Staton was set to begin his teaching career at DP for the 2022-2023 school year. Known to most as Coach Staton, Evan is a DP alum of the CIS magnet, and assistant coach to our boy’s water polo team. Just days before starting his career, he was diagnosed with cancer and immediately began his fight. We will be ordering shirts to show our support and let Coach Staton know that DP is “Staton Strong”.

Please congratulate senior, Reagan McConnell, on qualifying for & competing in the state meet in Tallahassee two weekends ago.

* Last week the DP swim teams finished up their season by competing in states. Gabo Morales place 5th in the 100 backstroke (50.86 **New school Record) and 7th in the 100 Butterfly (50.37).
* The girls 400 Freestyle relay (Bella Tannus, Juliana DuBray, Claire Laurila and Anny Contreras) placed 18th.

Girls Basketball
Lady Panthers are coming off their program’s 5th State Title in school history. The defending State Champs begin the regular season this Monday, November 14th. Our ladies are geared up to make another title run this season. The Lady Panthers team return all, but 1 (Kalea Rainey) to graduation from last year’s State Championship Team. Let’s come out and support our ladies on their journey!
