The Panther Post
Monday, November 7, 2022
DPHS Community Member,

I hope this finds all of our Panthers' month of November already off to a successful start! As we begin the new week, we have only 10 instructional days left before the Thanksgiving break (November 21-25) which means we will be releasing progress reports shortly. I invite all of our Panther parents to check in on Skyward and have your student turn in any missing assignments now. Please remember that as part of the required Hurricane Ian make-up time, this coming Wednesday, November 9 will be a regular length school day — no early release.

In this issue we have included information on OCPS magnet programs for 2023-2024 as the application process opened on November 1. Please note that on November 10 the district will be offering the annual Virtual Magnet Fair which is always very well done. OCPS has many advantages given our scale when compared to other school systems around the country and this is one of the big ones — widely varying school choice opportunities.
Saying goodbye to a good friend and an excellent educator:
On Thursday, October 27, a selection of Orchestra students, the cheerleaders and the faculty and staff bade goodbye to Dr. Ralph and wished him well in his retirement. Dr. Ralph worked at DP for 11 years and will be missed! He is looking forward to cruising with his wife and going camping in his RV.
Dr. Ralph at his retirement sendoff (center) with Principal Ramsey (left) and other DP staff and guests that dropped by to wish him well in retirement.
DP cheerleaders at the retirement function for Dr. Ralph.
Please remember that Friday, November 11 is Veterans Day. Should you pass someone actively serving, or maybe know someone who has served (we have several veterans on staff at DP and many of our families have veterans who have worn the uniform), kindly take a quick moment to thank them. We all owe our veterans a debt of gratitude for their time, bravery, and sacrifice for this great country.

Have a wonderful week!

In Panther Pride,

Jackie Ramsey
Principal

In Chelsea’s words: “The coolest part was being invited to the conference to sit at a round table discussion (the youngest student ever) with Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Once there, they asked me to give a presentation on intellectual properties, host the gala and distribute awards to justices/magistrates & student recipients.”

Panther Parents! Please be cautious when dropping your students off in the morning and pay attention to anyone directing traffic. In addition, please DO NOT drop your students off on Turkey Lake Rd as this is extremely unsafe. Instead, please use the designated student drop off loop.

A reminder that vehicles turning right into the Paw Street entrance (student drop off/parking) should only be turning from the far right lane as this is the only turn lane. The center lane is a straight through lane and turning from that lane could result in a ticket, as well as being extremely dangerous and resulting in an accident. Please remember that there is also no student drop off at or in the bus loop.

Theatre
The Theatre Magnet is proud to present their 2022 One Act, MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDREN.

Widely considered one of the great dramatic creations of the modem stage, Mother Courage and Her Children is Bertolt Brecht’s most passionate and profound statement against war. Set in the seventeenth century, the play follows Anna Fierling, an itinerant trader, as she pulls her wagon of wares and her children through the blood and carnage of Europe’s religious wars. Battered by hardships, brutality, and the degradation and death of her children, she ultimately finds herself alone with the one thing in which she truly believes — her ramshackle wagon with its tattered flag and freight of boots and brandy. Fitting herself in its harness, the old woman manages, with the last of her strength, to drag it onward to the next battle.

Performances will occur Friday, 11/11 and Saturday, 11/12 at 7:00 pm.

Performances will begin with a showcase of our individual event competition pieces, and will conclude with the performance of MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDREN.

Manicure Mondays:
Do you need community service hours for Bright Futures? Manicure Monday is every Monday after school from 2:30-3:30. Head to room 3-112 to help clean up the different areas around campus. You will receive one hour every day that you go. Make sure to submit a proposal to your guidance counselor first, and to bring your community service log form. We hope to see you there!
Breast Cancer Awareness Month Booth:
In order to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness month, Student Council hosted an informational booth during A and B lunch. The trifold was set up to spread lifesaving information, including instructions on detecting signs/symptoms at an early stage before it becomes a severe case. Pink ribbons were up for purchase for 50 cents with all proceeds being donated to breast cancer research. Complimentary pink Starbursts and pens were given to those who stopped to listen.
October Teacher of the Month:
This month, Student Council asked students to nominate teachers they believe deserved the title of “Teacher of the Month”. The winners for the month of October are Mrs. Patel, Ms. Golub, and Ms. Birriel. We want to congratulate you all for connecting with your students and for making learning from you enjoyable. To thank them, SGA provided them with a bag of goodies. Please make sure to vote in future months in order to thank teachers for being “Never Less Than the Best!"
Pet Drive:
The pet drive was a success! Student Council got numerous donations and is ready to send them to our local shelter, Orange County Animal Services. Over the course of a couple of weeks, students went down to the Media Center and handed in a variety of items, including treats, toys, food, and litter.

Support for Coach Staton
Evan Staton was set to begin his teaching career at DP for the 2022-2023 school year. Known to most as Coach Staton, Evan is a DP alum of the CIS magnet, and assistant coach to our boy’s water polo team. Just days before starting his career, he was diagnosed with cancer and immediately began his fight. We will be ordering shirts to show our support and let Coach Staton know that DP is “Staton Strong”.
Please follow the SchoolPay link if you would like to purchase a shirt. Please include your name and shirt size. We will send out a notification via social media when shirts are ready to be picked up. If you are out of the area, there is an option to have your shirt shipped. Please see the directions in the link:

If you would like donate to Evan, please follow the link for the GoFundMe that has been set up for him:
