The Panther Post
Monday, February 27, 2023
DPHS Community Member,

Congratulations to the Girls' Basketball team for winning all of their games throughout the state playoffs and then finishing the 2022-2023 season by winning with the State Championship vs. Winter Haven on Saturday! (Please see the special segment in this issue.) What makes this achievement even more incredible is that our Lady Panthers won the State Championship in 2021-2022 making for back-to-back Championship seasons! Moreover, our Panthers compete in the Class 7A FHSAA division which consists of 96 teams from the largest high schools in the Florida—the third largest state in the USA. This means that they have played against some of the finest high school basketball programs in the nation throughout the season and the playoffs. The level of effort, determination, and coaching it takes to win the State Championship at this high level is remarkable. Way to represent DP and make us proud!

We have a number of important announcements in this edition to include prom details and 4th quarter exams. For our college bound seniors, the weeks are passing quickly so I hope you have completed your FAFSA paperwork and have been reviewing all forms of financial aid including scholarships. College costs have been increasing at a rate faster than most goods and services (see chart below) so it is essential you do not lose out simply by missing a required deadline.

Thank you for reading about some of our latest Panther success stories and please look for any items that may apply to your student or household. Have a wonderful week!

FLORIDA STATE CHAMPIONS!
Class 7A Girls Basketball
This past weekend the Girls Varsity Basketball team competed at states in Lakeland. They won Friday’s semi-final game against Miami 40-31. The ladies then played against Winter Haven Saturday night for the championship. After being down at the half, the girls pulled out all the stops to win the game 47-43! Congrats to all the players and coaching staff on your back-to-back state championship win! #AwwDP
2022-2023 CLASS 7A STATE CHAMPIONS!
Back-to-back FHSAA state champion Dr. Phillips has won 50 of 52 girls basketball games since last season!
In addition to their very impressive run at States, Coach Jones has been named the Coach of the Year for 7A-District 11 for the second year in a row. Thanks for all your hard work Coach Jones!
Junior Trinity Turner has been named player of the year for 7A-District 11.

Excerpt from the J.C. Carnahan article:
Defending girls basketball state champion Dr. Phillips overcame early turnovers and foul trouble Friday afternoon in Lakeland to ensure a return to the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 7A state-title game.

DP held off Miami High (23-6) for a 40-31 win in what was a rematch of last year’s state final.
Orlando Sentinel (Feb. 25) - "Dr. Phillips rallies to repeat as FHSAA girls basketball state champions" - by J.C. Carnahan

Excerpt from the J.C. Carnahan article:
Dr. Phillips did it the hard way Saturday night in Lakeland while repeating as Florida High School Athletic Association girls basketball state champions.

The Panthers (30-1) rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half and came away with a wild 47-43 win vs. Winter Haven (24-5) in the Class 7A final at RP Funding Center.

DP trailed 25-11 with 5:36 left in the third quarter after shooting just 17% from the floor in the first half.

“I kept telling them, ‘It doesn’t matter what it says on the scoreboard because we’re still going to win’,” Dr. Phillips coach Anthony Jones said. “You can ask any of our players. I don’t care if we’re down 20. I believe we’re always going to win. Our players can persevere through anything because we work hard for everything.”
