DPHS Community Member,
This past week we entered the second progress monitoring window for FAST testing and our underclassmen tested on Monday. Participation in state testing is a requirement and expectation of all students working towards a standard diploma. Thank you to our Panthers that tested for their attendance and putting forth their best efforts.
This week our CIS and VPA magnets are holding Open Houses Tuesday evening (please see flyers below). Both are leading, well established programs and something I encourage OCPS families to explore. Please keep in mind that all OCPS magnet applications are only open until Feb. 15, about four weeks from now.
Report cards are now available on Skyward. If you have yet to review your student's grades with them, please do so over the long holiday weekend. In this edition you will find updated tutoring schedules which are opportunities available to any student needing additional support if their grades are not quite where they should be. As we are already two school weeks into 2023, I encourage students to take advantage of the free tutoring sooner vs. later.

We were pleased to have the US Army Jazz Ambassadors on our campus to perform for hundreds of middle school students, many who will be DP Panthers next school year!
There is no school on Monday in observance of the Dr. MLK, Jr. holiday. Classes will resume Tuesday morning as usual. With respect to MLK Day, I would like to share a few interesting facts regarding Dr. King's success which can be traced back to early on from his local public school experience and his life-long enjoyment of learning.
One of King's great passions was reading. Growing up, he enjoyed and understood the importance of reading. He was also a leader on his high school's debate team. An excellent student, school was always a personal priority and he actually skipped two grade levels. He graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta with a B.A. at age 19. He then chose to follow in his father's footsteps in the ministry and earned a theology doctorate from Boston University.
You are probably already aware of what Dr. King achieved with respect to civil rights, but you may not how much the world respected his tireless efforts. In 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize at age 35 (the youngest to that point). In its January 1964 issue, Time named Martin Luther King, Jr., “Man of the Year” for 1963, making him the first African American recipient of this honor. He was also named by Time as one of the Top 100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century. Jimmy Carter awarded King the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. Congress and President Reagan created Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday, first observed in 1986.
|
|
|
Dr. King did not come from wealth and was confronted with all kinds of roadblocks and dangerous situations during his quest for equal rights. He never gave up and along the way, he never quit learning. He always relied upon one of his greatest assets to carry him towards his goals—his education. Food for thought at this MLK Day.
Thank you for reading.

SENIORS!!!
The Bright Futures Application is OPEN!!!! The FFAA application- more commonly known as the Bright Futures Scholarship—is a scholarship application that contains more than 25 scholarships in one application. The best part is—the application only takes 5 minutes to complete!! EVERYONE—and I mean everyone—will be required to apply to the FFAA (Bright Futures) application. I will be visiting English classes after Winter break to help assist you in completing this application.
Check your student email for IMPORTANT information on how to apply to the FFAA (Bright Futures) Award. If you would like assistance in completing this application TODAY- come in any time today for Walk-In Tuesday and we can assist you!!
You also recently received a printout of your initial eligibility for the FFAA (Bright Futures) Award. That print shows a couple of important points: Your application status (if you have applied or not), your community service hours, your most recent reported SAT/ACT score, and your core GPA. All of these points will be used to determine whether or not you will be eligible for the award.
If you would like information on whether or not you currently qualify for Bright Futures, or want to see what you are missing, you can stop by the College and Career Room any time today with a pass from a teacher. Here are a few more points about the Bright Futures Application:
● The Bright Futures Scholarships is a part of the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) that includes 25 other scholarships.
● When you complete the application for Bight Futures, you also complete the application for all 25 scholarships
● The FFAA application is NOT FAFSA
● You do not need to have all Bright futures requirements completed by the time you complete the application
● Community Service Hours need to be completed and turned into your guidance counselor by the last day of school
● Students have until July 1st, 2023 (after graduation) to complete their testing requirement (ACT/SAT)
● Test scores MUST be sent to a state university (UCF/UF/FSU) through your College Board or ACT account to be seen on the Bright Futures report.
● Service hours MUST be all Service hours or work hours- hours CAN NOT be combined to meet the full 75/100 hour requirement

Scholarships
Seniors!!! Right now, you should have MOST if not ALL your college applications completed!!! While you wait to hear back decisions from those colleges, use this time to explore SCHOLARSHIPS!!!! Be sure to use the resources below to research scholarships.
There are many scholarship opportunities available for students, both locally and nationally.
We encourage students to use scholarship search engines to find the best fit and apply. Remember scholarships are open to everyone, so it is important to spend your time only applying to the ones for which you feel you are uniquely qualified. It is also good to create a separate email account when you sign up for these national scholarship sites because you will receive many emails daily from these sites.

● 2022-2023 Scholarship List - Live Google Doc that is continually updated by OCPS staff with scholarship opportunities. Check often and keep track of deadlines.
● Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) - This form helps determine students' eligibility to receive federal or state financial aid. Required by most colleges. We recommend all LBV Seniors fill out the FAFSA no matter what the income of the family is. To complete a FAFSA, the student must be a US Citizen, permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen, asylum granted.
● College Scholarship Service Profile (CCS) - Some colleges and universities require a CSS profile that can be completed on the College Board website. An online application that collects information used by hundreds of colleges, universities, professional schools, and scholarship programs to award financial aid from sources outside of the federal government. There is a fee from the College Board, so be sure your school requires it before you complete it.
● BigFuture - From the College Board, students may earn entries in monthly drawings for $500 and $40,000 scholarships by completing steps to plan for college. The sooner you start and the more steps you complete, the more chances you’ll have to win. Every month, BigFuture selects two $40,000 winners and hundreds of $500 winners who complete one or more steps.
● Raise.Me - Scholarship dollars for achievements in and out of the classroom, such as having good grades, playing sports, and more!
● LendEDU Scholarships - Provides students and families a step-by-step guide in the different types of scholarship opportunities and provides a list of current ones.
● CareerOneStop - Search more than 8,000 scholarships, fellowships, grants, and other financial aid awards.

Student Drop-offs
Panther Parents! Please be cautious when dropping your students off in the morning and pay attention to anyone directing traffic. In addition, please DO NOT drop your students off on Turkey Lake Rd as this is extremely unsafe. Instead, please use the designated student drop off loop.
A reminder that vehicles turning right into the Paw Street entrance (student drop-off/parking) should only be turning from the far right lane as this is the only turn lane. The center lane is a straight through lane and turning from that lane could result in a ticket, as well as being extremely dangerous and resulting in an accident. Please remember that there is also no student drop off at or in the bus loop.
Student Diver's License
Students must have a valid driver’s license and decal to drive to school and park on campus. Restricted driver’s licenses and or learning permits are not allowed.
Earbuds and Student Safety
When transitioning from class to class, students should be able to hear their surrounding at all times as they are walking. Please remind your scholar that they should refrain from having earbuds in both ears as they are moving around campus. Earbuds, if worn, should only be in one ear.
Cell Phones
Cell phones will be allowed only before and after school. They WILL NOT be allowed in the classrooms at all, and we will follow the OCPS Policy and code of conduct with cell phones. This has been approved by the leadership team. Cell phones must remain concealed during instruction time.
