The Panther Post
Monday, March 6, 2023
DPHS Community Member,

This is our final week of the 2022-2023 third quarter. There will be no school the following week as we will be on spring break with classes resuming on Monday, March 20.

We want our Panthers to have every minute of instructional time they deserve so this Monday we will begin running random tardy sweeps (please see details below). As we have seen, the school year passes by so quickly already plus we had the impact on instructional momentum from last fall's hurricanes. Therefore, we need to reinforce the importance of our Panthers being seated in class when the bell rings. I thank all of our families for their support with tardies and our Panthers in advance for their on-time efforts this week.

I hope you will enjoy reading about some of our latest Panther happenings. Have a wonderful week!

DP Panthers—Never Less Than The Best

Jackie Ramsey
Principal

Pictured very and above: On Thursday, Feb. 23 Dr. Phillips held their first annual parade to celebrate student success! All students who achieved state level recognition whether it be in academics, athletics, performing arts or any other school activity were celebrated with the school as a whole watching and celebrating along with our iconic drumline and amazing cheerleaders! Thank you for being representing DP and proving that we are truly, #Neverlessthanthebest!

CIS trip to Ybor City in Tampa
Mrs. Fleming's CIS Magnet AP US History students, Mr. Hunt's AP Language students and Ms. Birriel's AP Spanish students enjoy a day at historical YBOR City (Tampa district). Students went on a walking tour and pointed out Cuban and Sicilian influence in architecture, history, and art. The day ended with an amazing lunch at the famous Colombia Restaurant. Thank you Mrs. Fleming for planning a great field trip!
DP Visual Performing Arts (VPA)
Our VPA Visual Arts Faculty had the opportunity to take an amazing group of 33 AP Studio Art and Portfolio Level Art Students to the Orlando Museum of Art for a Portfolio Review Day Event (above). This event is the first of its kind in Orange County Public Schools thanks to our Visual and Performing Arts Leaders at the District Level and United Arts of Central Florida.

At this portfolio review event, students were encouraged to bring portfolio pieces to be reviewed by the adjudication panel of professionals who are professionals in their respective art and design fields. Our students received individual feedback on their portfolios from a jury of visual art and design experts.

While we were visiting The Orlando Museum of Art, we had the chance to view the Peggy Crosby Student Gallery which is currently displaying the OMA Student Exhibition 1 this Spring 2023. We also had two of our AP Art Students with us on the trip whose works were chosen by the Museum Curator to be in this art exhibition! DPHS has a total of 4 student artworks chosen to be in this Special Museum Exhibition during the Spring Semester. Come out to see our students work soon or maybe over spring break!

Congratulations to:

Arts in Our Schools Month
Arts Education Advocacy is so important to promote in our society and especially in our schools! Every year OCPS celebrates "Arts in Our Schools Month" during March with participating OCPS schools who gather their art students' artworks for the RBELC "Arts in Our Schools Month" Art Exhibition and street light post banners displayed throughout the streets of downtown Orlando. This year our DP Art students have been diligently working on a street light banner design that represents The Lake Eola Fountain and The Orlando Eye painted in the impressionist style inspired by Monet and Degas.

Quoted from: NYCU: School Board Meeting Highlights for Feb. 28, 2023
"Arts in our Schools Month recognized Orange County Public Schools surpasses the state percentage of students enrolled in arts courses. As a result of our commitment to supporting visual and performing arts education, OCPS students participate in local, state, and national performances and exhibitions. During the month of March, a K-12 exhibit will be available to the public at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center showcasing student artwork from across the district."

Select DP artists will be recognized and have their art on display for the month of March in the "Arts in Our Schools Month" Exhibition in the RBELC (school board building downtown).

Arden Yu’s “Wandering Mind” - Award of Merit - PTA Reflections Art Contest
Miguel Uraneta Mendoza - Music - Award of Merit - PTA Reflections Art Contest
Fletcher Roedema’s “Picture Perfect”- Award of Excellence - PTA Reflections Art Contest

National PTA has a long-standing commitment to arts education. The Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boost student confidence and success in the arts and in life. Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. This 50+ year-old program helps them explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life. Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts.

CAUTION NOTE FOR OUR PANTHERS: While research studies like this Feb. 2023 report from the New York Federal Reserve Bank are interesting, they are not the sole basis for choosing a college major. Other important life-time factors come into play beyond economics such as: 1) What are your priorities?; What are you really interested in?; What are you good at?; How rigorous will the college coursework be?; and even Where do you want to live?

Please remember to take advantage of our College & Career Resource Center while you are still at DP. Here you can find help as you consider your post high school options whether you are planning on attending college, entering the workforce directly, joining a branch of the US military service, or other opportunities.
