November 2021 | Thankful for Our Dragons
Tiffin University is launching a new program on campus, the Tiffin Innovation Project (TIP). Especially for budding student entrepreneurs, the TIP program is a three-month-long program to learn how to develop and launch an innovative startup company from experts in the field.
Starting in January 2022, selected on-campus and online students will meet once a week to learn how to develop and launch an innovative start-up company. Speakers will include established high-profile entrepreneurs like TU Board Member, Danial Jameel, Founder & President at Ready Education, a leading student engagement platform for higher education.
Students are encouraged to create teams that may include others who are not TU students but must have the TU student as the CEO of the group. Classes will be every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m., starting January 26, 2022 and run through April 27, 2022. Students must apply for the program and pitch an idea to get accepted.
After completing the program, one winning team will be selected to receive funding in startup costs for their company.

CLASS SCHEDULE UPDATE| A new format for spring
TU has decided to pilot a Monday/Wednesday, Tuesday/Thursday class model for Spring 2022. Fridays will be reserved for meetings, performing arts, student-athletic travel and competitions. We will continue to have evening classes Monday through Thursday. While the schedule change will not completely eliminate students missing classes, it will reduce the number of occurrences. Additionally, many of our students work over the weekends, including Fridays, and the schedule change supports students who need to work financially.
We are also working to increase Friday and weekend activities for students, creating more student engagement with campus activities and programming designed to roll into the weekend. We will collect data on the schedule structure change to gauge the impact on class attendance, student engagement, academic performance, the mental health of students and COVID case management. We will learn from this pilot and the data gathered will help to inform how we will move forward for the fall term.
Administrative offices will be open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., as normal. Faculty will continue to be available during their scheduled class times and office hours, as well as virtually or by email throughout the week.

IN THE KNOW | STEAM Building sneak peak
We met up with Eric Magers, a manager at Clouse Construction Corp and TU alumni class of ‘85, for a sneak peek into the new STEAM Building on campus, slated to open during winter break this year.
The STEAM Building will connect the Hertzer Technology Center and the previous science laboratories into one seamless Center for Science and Technology, allowing students to explore and delve deeper into subjects such as chemistry, biology, forensic and applied sciences, exercise science and health sciences.

FIRST-GEN DRAGONS |National First-Gen College Celebration
On November 8, First-Generation Dragons, the campus student organization, hosted a panel of faculty, staff and alumni (pictured right) who identified as first-generation college students when they were undergraduates. Alumni, family, friends and students joined us to learn more about their stories and where they are in their careers. November 8 holds significance for TU's First-Gen Dragons because this day honors the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. The Higher Education Act (HEA) emerged out of President Johnson’s War on Poverty. HEA was intended to help level a playing field that for too long had been weighed against Americans from minority and low-income backgrounds. In addition to creating federal grants and loan programs to help students finance their educations, the legislation made key investments in institutions of higher education.
Check out this video to explore why we celebrate our First-Gen Dragons on November 8 and every day! Below are a few snapshots from the celebration.
