September 2021 | The new academic year is underway!
|
|
All new students were officially welcomed to campus and the City of Tiffin during Welcome Weekend 2021. There were numerous events and activities planned to help students adjust and get to know one another at their new home away from home. Check out just a few of the highlights from the weekend:
Saturday - Welcome to Campus!
Moving belongings into a residence hall room is an exciting, but anxious time. Our faculty, staff and upper-class students had such a great time welcoming and helping our new students!
Our Convocation Ceremony was the official start to Tiffin University’s academic year. It’s a great way for our entire campus and community to welcome our new students and their families to the Dragon Nation.
The amazing weather in Tiffin continued into the evening and students gathered in the courtyard for Games with the Greeks and Glow up Dragons, while others ventured downtown to the East Green Amphitheater for Live Music with Shayna Steele.
Sunday
On Sunday, the first-year students had the opportunity to meet with their first-year family. Students met with their Engage instructor, peer mentor and classmates while preparing for the upcoming year.
We then took our annual class photo in the Hayes Courtyard and then walked our new students to the "Around the Town" event located in downtown Tiffin. This event allows
our students to learn about and meet with local businesses, organizations and groups. The weekend ended with pedal bike tours of TU's campus!

IN THE KNOW | Supporting a student through homesickness
|
|
Homesickness is something nearly every college student will experience when living away from home for the first time. Having physical distance from family, friends and familiar places can start to weigh on a student. We sat down with Julie Richards, the Director of Wellness and Counseling Services here at TU, to talk about what homesickness is, and how families can support their students through homesickness from afar.
What is homesickness?
A feeling of sadness or loneliness in anticipation for (or after) a departure from home which results in the longing for family, friends and the living environment that was left.
Is homesickness common in college students?
Yes, in fact over 30% feel low levels of homesickness, while about 69% of first year students feel severe homesickness. This is a very normal feeling and students should be reminded that they are not alone in these feelings ...

September is a busy month for Student Engagement.
On September 2, Greek Rush kicks off with a Greek Informational Night, required for anyone taking part in fall rush. The following week each fraternity and sorority will host open events and conduct interviews leading up to Bid Day on September 10. There will be three weeks of pledging this year, ending on Greek Crossover Night on October 1.
This year Student Engagement will once again host Labor Stay Weekend during the Labor Day holiday. This year's festivities include a late-night cookout, concert downtown, ice cream social, lawn games, tie-dye event, music, disc golf and sand volleyball tournaments, food truck and more!
This month, two big events will include Student Government's Casino Night on September 17 and Campus Activities Board's "Bollywood" Night on the Patio at the Wall Street Pub on September 24.
The last week of September will be Homecoming Week with daily events and programs, and we will see the crowning of our 2021-22 Homecoming King and Queen. Pictured above is our reigning Homecoming King and Queen, Junior Monroe and Tinashe Peresuh.

GIVING DAY | Mark your calendars!
|
|
Tiffin University alumni, friends, current and future donors, as well as surrounding communities, will have the opportunity to make a difference in TU’s future by donating during its third annual “Giving Day” event on Wednesday, September 15.
“Giving Day is a wonderful way to show gratitude to a place that means so much to so many,” said Mikki King, Director of Annual Giving. “Your support will impact current and future Dragons by giving them a solid foundation to build successful lives.”
“Anyone can be a donor, regardless of the size of the gift,” said King. “Unrestricted gifts, in any amount, are vital as they provide the greatest flexibility for the University to meet its most pressing needs. It also generates awareness to our students about the generosity of our alumni and friends.”
For more details and to donate, contact Mikki King at kingmr@tiffin.edu or 419.448.3443.
