December 5, 2019

Dear St. George Families,

I recently read an article entitled, "How parishes can turn 'Christmas Catholics' into regular Mass goers." Of course, this immediately caught my attention, as I am always looking for ways to invite people back and to encourage people to practice in their faith. The article began this way: "No one wants to be the innkeeper in a Christmas pageant. You know the one, the door-slamming landlord who turned away Joseph and Mary before they became the Holy Family. Any role is better than that one!"
Yet, this is sometimes what happens. Those folks who have been away or have never ventured into a Catholic church get turned away by our lack of hospitality and our seeking to accommodate ourselves before them. "Studies show that people return to churches because they are welcomed and invited, not because the Church got everything else right."
Christmas is our chance to welcome the stranger and the one who does not often come; to be a good innkeeper. The smile, the welcome, the moving into the center of the pew might just be what makes an infrequent Mass goer into a regular member of the parish. But hospitality does not just happen. If we want to welcome the stranger, we need to imagine what it is like to be a stranger, and I think we all know what that's like.
A smile, a warm hello and an exchange of names can become an invitation for someone to encounter the Church in a new way. Ask about their family. Share a little bit about yours. Tell them which Mass you attend and why and, if it seems right, ask them which Mass they attend.
This Sunday and the next few let us keep an eye out for strangers looking for a seat or the restroom, or someone to share a cup of coffee with. Be the family who makes room for strangers. Let's invite our family members who've been away, or co-worker or neighbor who have no church home. Be the good innkeeper, the one who chose the stranger, the one who did what one could to bring the Savior of our world into their world.

God bless
Jack Nelson

ST. GEORGE CHURCH PARISH?
Keep up with the happenings around St. George by reading the St. George Catholic Church Bulletin HERE.
CATHOLICISM: THE PIVOTAL PLAYERS : The Adult Faith Formation ministry will offer Bishop Robert Barron's last two Pivotal Players: Flannery O'Connor and Bishop Fulton Sheen. We will begin learning about Flannery O'Connor, whose influence on contemporary culture, particularly literature and film is profound. Her startling prose awakens us to sin and, consequently, to the need for salvation. Please come and join us as we delve deeper into O'Connor and how she radically changes our idea of what religious fiction can be. We meet in the Parish Office on Sunday, December 8th at 9:30 a.m. For more information contact Karen Fawley at (225) 293-2212 or [email protected].
