A Note from Jeff

Several week ago, as part of a Girl Scout Gold Award project that our Youth Group was supporting, several of us attended a Shabbat at Temple Beth Shalom in Arnold.

First of all, if you have never been - GO! It is interesting and loving and joyful. When you return, you will hear the echoes of our Jewish roots in our own services. We learned a lot, and we felt completely welcomed into their congregation.

When the shootings at the Pittsburgh synagogue took place last month, my thoughts flew to our own Temple. Our own neighbors, friends, schoolmates, teachers, business owners – they were all at risk simply because of their beliefs in how to worship God. I know the history, I’ve read the books, I’ve watched the documentaries, and I felt sick. We all wonder how we will react when faced with a test. I felt this was a test of my values, values I know we share. So, I knew I needed to return to Temple Beth Shalom and worship with them again, to say we will never forget and we will not abandon our neighbors. I was not alone. Thank God.

I am in contact with the Temple's formation director. She and I are going to actively search for ways to get our youth together, to learn, to laugh and to share. These days the news seems to come so fast and furiously that events of just days ago seem like distant memories. Some things we can forget and say, “Good riddance.” Some things we must not.

Shalom.

Young Children's Communion Class

This Saturday, Nov. 17 at 10 am in the church, we will gather children and parents to learn more about Holy Communion. This Eucharistic Celebration will teach us what communion is, why we do it, and how we do it. While we’ll be talking about communion at a child’s level, children of all ages are invited.  And on Sunday Nov. 18 at the 9 am service, those children will be invited to sit with their families in front of the church, and come to the altar with me while I celebrate!
Members of the parish are asked to provide holiday meals for their neighbors this Thanksgiving. We have received the names of those needing help in purchasing their holiday dinner from Broadneck Elementary School and the A.A. County Dept. of Social Services. The list includes both seniors and families with children. The Mission Commission will provide the turkeys; parishioners are asked to provide the "fixings" for the rest of the meal and deliver the food basket to assigned recipients a few days BEFORE Thanksgiving Day. NO COOKING INVOLVED. Turkeys and baskets will be available for pick-up in the Parish Hall THIS Sunday, Nov. 18, or by separate arrangement. In advance, you will receive the name of your recipient and delivery instructions. For questions, call Barbara Marder at 410 518 9978 or email [email protected].

Expect a similar request for Christmas baskets starting the week after Thanksgiving. If you can help with both baskets, please let Barbara know.
