Dear St. George Families,
After arriving at school one day last week, a five year old boy approached me and said, "I like your tie." I was so pleased to hear this compliment from one of our kindergarteners that it made me reply, "Thank you! You are very nice! That makes me smile!" This week I visited a few of the classrooms and asked the students to tell me some of the things (and people) that cheer them up on a dark, dreary, rainy day. Answers included friends, pets, family, ice cream, Jesus and smiles, etc. If you think about it, it doesn't take much to cheer someone up and to make someone smile. It's simple at times to change the way someone feels. And the fact that it can be so easy to brighten someone's day, leads me to believe we should try to do this service more often. There are countless ways to put a smile on someone's face, but do we make a conscious effort to do it, or are we like the five year old boy, and just speak out of kindness naturally? My challenge is to see if you can make someone smile tomorrow...better yet, see how many people you can make smile tomorrow.
A friend of mine shared with me recently, information about a book titled, "You Did It To Me" by Fr. Michael Gaitley. Fr. Gaitley is the author of "33 Days to Morning Glory." The book is a practical guide to the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, fitting right in with the Year of Mercy. My friend stated that Fr. Gaitley tells how we should practice "The Apostolate of Smiling," welcoming people with the warmth of Christ, even if it's as simple as a smile. Fr. Gaitley got "The Apostolate of Smiling" from Fr. Bruno Hagspiel. There are nearly two pages of small tips on smiling, and how a simple smile can not only cheer others up, but it also has the power to change one's heart and win souls for Christ. Indeed, it is the simple things in life that lead us to God. Salvation truly does involve loving everyone.

Volunteer Certification
- Any adult (18 years and older) wanting to volunteer with children of St. George Catholic School must fulfill the requirements as mandated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Diocese of Baton Rouge.
- In order to be assigned to a field trip or class activity, parents must successfully complete the volunteer certification process by Friday, September 30, 2016.
- First Time Training: Recognizing Child Abuse is the updated online child protection training tutorial. Volunteers who have not yet completed the email will be notified of their need to fulfill this updated requirement by Friday, September 30th.
- Additionally, the updated Code of Ethics must be reviewed by all volunteers. The last page of the document must be printed, signed and returned to the school office, attn: Susan Giles, Child Protection Coordinator. The updated Code of Ethics document may be accessed on our website HERE.

The St. George Book Fair is fast approaching! The theme this year is Bookaneers. Please take note of the dates below:

Sunday, September 18: Book Fair Open House -12:00pm - 2:00pm, Library
- September 19 - 22: Book Fair Sale Week
- Thursday, September 22: Book Fair Family Night Out 4:30pm - 7:30pm
Come by with your family to purchase books and enjoy good food and music. Several food trucks will be here and the SGS Advanced Band will be performing.
- Diary of a Wimpy kid: Double Down will be on pre-order.
Coincidentally, Monday, September 19 is International Talk and Dress like a Pirate Day, which fits right in with the Book Fair theme! To promote reading and the book fair, students may wear pirate accessories (eye patch, hat, bandana, etc.) to school on this day!

St. George Fair is looking for 7 diesel powered light towers and a forklift for this year's Fair. We hope that you or your company would be willing to donate these light towers and forklift for our fair on Saturday, October 8th and Sunday, October 9th. All donations are tax deductible!

Our St. George Dragonettes are putting on the 3rd Annual Jr. Dragonette Dance Clinic for all SGS
