Our school is participating in the National Day of Unplugging which usually takes place on the first Friday in March and is a worldwide event. This year, it will be during our Mardi Gras break, so we will participate in a school-wide event on the Wednesday before on February 26, 2025. We want to show our students how to be mindful and that there needs to be a healthy balance of time on their technology.
To say we live in a connected, high-speed world is a bit of an understatement. Sometimes, we can miss what’s happening right in front of us while we are hyper-connected to friends, family, and even strangers on social media. The National Day of Unplugging was created to spend time away from our screens for 24 hours and instead spend time in nature, connecting with loved ones, and relaxing. In our mass this morning, we learned that during this time of Lent, we need to be mindful and unplug from all the things distracting us daily to personally connect to God and the things that mean the most to us.
Our teachers here at St. George have been challenged to take students outside, create something, or do something that is an unplugged activity. Some examples of this in the past years included seeing kids playing outside for brain breaks, making “I unplug” posters, participating in a money market math activity, potting seeds, making paper cup phones for sound energy, reading books outside, playing music, singing songs, writing Japanese Haikus, and doing unplugged activities in computer class. These are just some examples of what we saw but many other activities were happening all over campus where kids could just be kids!
You will find ideas below on how you and your family can participate in this day and continue having conversations with your family about having a healthy balance with technology. We are challenging students to fill out the “I Unplug” side here and bring the “We Unplug” side home to brainstorm some ideas as a family. We can’t wait to hear what our students say about all the fun things they did to “connect” in a different way! Happy Unplugging Day! :)
