Dear Parents,

Our Thanksgiving Holiday break is next week and I just want to thank you for your support of our school. At our PTO meeting last night we talked about the successful Dragon Dash Jog-A-Thon we had, as well as how great the King Sooper cards are going. You know that we cannot provide many of the wonderful experiences for your children without this critical support.

In addition to your support with fundraisers, I want to thank you for volunteering at our school. It is so wonderful to walk into classrooms and see parents helping to run small groups or reading to students or assisting with paperwork.  It truly allows our teaching staff the time to focus on what is most important, which is of course, creating lessons and classroom environments that lead to student success.

And last, but certainly not least, I want to thank you for entrusting your children to our care each day. We absolutely love what we do and hopefully, you can see and feel that when you walk onto our campus and from the talks you have with your children.

Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Robin Lowe,
Executive Principal
Flagstaff Academy

Dear Flagstaff Family,

Since the recent election, there have been some things coming up at school we want parents to be aware of. There are rich opportunities to help guide and support your child's learning and development as human beings, regardless of your political position. At school, we are helping students process their reactions, choices, opinions, and questions...all while staying centered on relationship skills, kindness, and respect.

Incidents of violence and hate are in the news and happening in schools across the country. Although the post-election interactions between students, staff, and parents at Flagstaff Academy have been largely positive and respectful of differences, there have been some unfortunate exceptions.

Flagstaff Academy is no place for hate. We work hard to develop students who are prepared to be ethical leaders in a world community. Regardless of politics, it is in direct conflict with our school mission and values to use language of oppression and hate in our school. We will not tolerate it. Hate speech, racism, sexism, and bigotry were not acceptable before the election, and they are not acceptable now. I hope we can continue to count on you, as parents, to be part of a united front against the kinds of hurtful behaviors we are hearing about around the country, our schools, and even here at Flagstaff Academy.

Too many students are arriving to schools in this country to be greeted by racist banners, graffiti, or in-person hate-speech directed at them because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, or country of origin. Some of our own students and families have reported being targeted. Dragons stick together. We need your help to encourage our students to stand in support of each other. Students need us to be the example. They need to see how we stick up for others who are being targeted or mistreated.

I've been visiting classrooms and discussing kindness, respect, and acceptance of differences. We've been using stories, activities, and discussion to increase awareness. Teachers and staff throughout the school are supporting students and reminding them that a chain reaction of kindness starts with one person. We want you to join us.

Please talk to your children about this. It's a mistake to assume that they are not seeing things, hearing things, and wondering about things. Let's make sure that Flagstaff stays strong and connected against hate. We ask you to help us unite as Dragons, with one goal in mind, which is to step up with kindness to help all students feel welcome.
