Remember there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, March 18! Enjoy the long weekend!

Dear Parents,

This week we are holding our spring semester parent conferences to review current information we have on your child and to get your input on how things are progressing for the school year. It is so important that we work as a team to ensure the success of our students; these conferences are a critical component to that work. Thank you for participating and being a partner to your child's teacher, and to our school.

Also, I can't help but brag on two of our teachers, Ms. Ewing and Mr. Barker, and their Robotics teams, for their incredible effort at the FIRST Robotics High School competition held at Northern Arizona University this past weekend. In fact, two of our current middle school students were in Flagstaff, Arizona with Mr. Barker's team (Ridgebotics), and nine of our former students are on Ms. Ewing's team (Up-A-Creek Robotics)! Ms. Ewing's team also won the coveted Chairman's Award, which happens to be the highest honor a team can receive in FIRST Robotics AND they qualified for Nationals, which will take place April 27-30 in St. Louis, Missouri!!  We are so proud of the hard work Ms. Ewing and Mr. Barker do as mentors to their teams and the inspiration they provide to our students!

Both teams will be competing at the Colorado Regional held at the University of Denver in late March, and the teams will be cheered on by a high energy group of Flagstaff's middle-school programming and technology students.

Have a wonderful three day weekend - stay warm (although I can't help but admit that I am so happy we are getting some snow again - I didn't get enough this winter!)

Applications Accepted Through Friday, April 1 at 5PM

Join the Flagstaff Board of Directors - Now Accepting Applications!

Why I Serve: Caren King

Q:  Why did you volunteer to serve on the Board of Directors?
A:  I wanted to be more involved at the school where my only child was attending. I had previously volunteered in the classroom in the elementary lower grades and found that to be very rewarding, but as she grew older there were less opportunities to volunteer within the classroom. I thought that serving on the Board would be an enormous undertaking and it does take some time, but not as much as I had thought.

Q: What's needed to serve on the board?
A: All that's required is that you care about our school with the larger picture in mind - beyond what is best for your child(ren) to what is best for the entire population.

Q: How long have you served and in what roles?
A: This is the end of my fourth year on the Board.  I've  served as Secretary, Treasurer and Vice-President.

Q:  What will you take away from your Board of Directors experience?
A:  The things I will take away from this experience are the  interactions with all those who are committed to making the school the best it can be. I feel much  more in tune with what is happening in my daughter's school life.  I've also enjoyed working with  parents who are passionate about the school and want the best for everyone at Flagstaff Academy.

Board of Directors Elections for the 2016-2017 School Year

Members of the Board of Directors are volunteers responsible for providing oversight and governance for Flagstaff Academy in accordance with the mission and charter of the school. Board members help set and approve the school's annual budget, define school policies, help guide the academic mission, and oversee the work of the Executive Director and Executive Principal.

This year we are seeking three (3) new members to join the Board of Directors. This year we have a particular need for Directors who have legal, financial, or educational expertise.  However, most importantly, our current Board is seeking people who have a great passion to serve, who can work as part of a team, think critically, be willing to learn, and make decisions for the betterment of the school as a whole. We have had men and women from all walks of life serve as members of the Board.

Serving the Board of Directors has a very meaningful impact on our school, so please consider applying!

Applications are available on the school's website, and are due by Friday, April 1, 2016 at 5:00PM.

If you have any questions about the elections process, please email me at Debbie Nelson at dnelson@flagstaffacademy.org.

The Board is responsible for making the strategic decisions to keep our school's operations in line with our mission by providing the school administration the necessary resources and support to be successful.

All Board meetings are open to the public. Meetings are normally held on the first Tuesday of every month starting at 5:30PM at the school. Please see the school calendar or the "Board of Directors" section of the school website for scheduled meeting dates.
