IntheNews  HELLO FROM PRINCIPAL LOWE

Dear Parents,

Now that we are well into our school year, let's talk about the importance of regular attendance for your child. Research shows that "chronic student absence reduces even the best teacher's ability to provide learning opportunities." Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing more than two school days per month. We want to teach your child, but when they are consistently tardy or absent, our hands are tied. Whether or not the absence is excused, missing more than 10% of the school year affects achievement, graduation rates, and social-emotional factors like grit and perseverance.
  • Elementary Parents - In grades 1-5, we begin each day with math. When your child is tardy, they are missing important math instruction.
  • Kindergarten Parents - Research clearly indicates that chronic student absence in kindergarten leads to absenteeism issues in later grades.
  • All Parents - If a student is 10 minutes late to school each day, this adds up to missing more than 33 hours of class time. A student with a 90% attendance average for kindergarten through 12th grade will miss over a year of accumulated time in the classroom.
We encourage you to consider these factors when determining whether or not the absence is necessary (such as in the case of illness with fever or vomiting). Helping our children learn to work through those days when they just aren't quite up to par, yet they aren't really ill is an important life lesson in perseverance.

Thank you for letting me go on about attendance, but it is so important to the overall academic success of children that I thought it needed to be addressed!
Have a wonderful three day weekend!

Warmly,

Robin Lowe
Executive Principal
