Deacons Around the Diocese

Bishop Duckworth and Deacon deGravelles

Participate in Interfaith Federation Prayer Breakfast

The Rt. Rev. Shannon Duckworth opened with prayer the 2025 Annual Prayer Breakfast of the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge, and Archdeacon Charles deGravelles delivered the keynote address. Founded in 1986 to promote peace, unity and justice among the various faith traditions in the Baton Rouge area, the Federation is known for its many interfaith programs and for forging relationships across racial, cultural and religious divides.

The theme of this year’s prayer breakfast was “Re-Imagine, Renew, Rise.” In his talk, DeGravelles described these “three Rs” as “rallying words” that “stir the blood and get the creative juices flowing” but added a “fourth R” as a “key to unlocking those forward-looking words.”

Standing with a Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge banner are, left to right, The Rt. Rev. Shannon Duckworth; Jennifer Johnson, Trinity Episcopal Church of Baton Rouge; Susan Hymel, St. Aloysius Catholic Church of Baton Rouge; The Most. Rev. Michael Duca, Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Baton Rouge; and Deacon Charles deGravelles.

“If we’re going to launch ourselves into the future in a spirit of innovation and renewal, we need a good diving board with some spring in it, and I can suggest no better place from which to dive into the future than the remembrance of what we stand for and what we have accomplished together over the past nearly forty years.”

“One of the most important things we’ve done for the Baton Rouge community over the years is to model what unity looks like,” deGravelles noted. “What does it say to a community to see churches and synagogues and mosques and temples coming together in a spirit of peace and good will?

Goodness knows not just Baton Rouge, but the country and world need this kind of role model that we have been for our community.

DeGravelles highlighted the Federation’s annual CommUNITY Concerts that feature music from the wide variety of cultural and religious traditions that comprise the Federation. He also noted as an example of justice the Holy Grill, a Federation-sponsored community center and feeding station in the Zion City neighborhood of Baton Rouge.

Together Baton Rouge Gathers for Change

Photo provided by Together Baton Rouge.

On September 16, Together Baton Rouge gathered at Mount Carmel Baptist Church for a spirited community meeting focused on pressing local concerns. Members discussed the ongoing redistricting lawsuit, the Community Lighthouse Project, and the push for streetlight equity across neighborhoods. The meeting also included opportunities to learn more about the Mayor’s Thrive campaign.

The Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana—represented by members from St. Margaret’s, St. James, and St. Patrick’s—was among the many churches and institutions present, adding their voice and support to the work. The energy in the room reflected a deep commitment to justice, equity, and building a stronger Baton Rouge for everyone.

October 9 - The Rev. Canon Morgan MacIntire
Strength to Strength: Getting Clear About Your Identity, Your Call and Your Connections

In her memoir Marrow, author Elizabeth Lesser shares the profound journey she undertook following her sister Maggie's cancer diagnosis. She chronicles the inner battles they faced—together and apart—as they prepared for a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Woven throughout are powerful themes of identity, purpose, and connection as each sister discovers deeper truths about herself and the other.

As women of faith, we hold a unique call to support, uplift, and renew one another in ministry and in daily life. Yet that instinct is often interrupted by inner doubts—feelings of inadequacy, imposter syndrome, jealousy, scarcity, insecurity…the relentless inner monologue. How do we quiet the voices that deceive? How do we summon the courage to do the inner work? And how can gaining clarity about our own call and identity free others to do the same?

Through reflection, conversation, and prayerful practice, we will create sacred space to uncover what grounds us, what calls us, and how we are bound together in God’s work. Come ready to be nourished, encouraged, and surprised by what emerges.

Reading the book beforehand may enrich your experience, but it is not required for participation!
