Dec 2017 & Jan 2018
Dear Teacher Champions:

It is difficult to believe that 2017 is already drawing to a close and we are half-way through the academic year.  We are so excited about unprecedented levels of participation in the Dream in Green Academy this academic year, with 111 schools enrolled across Miami-Dade.

We know that the spring semester brings much added work for teachers, but we want to encourage you all to keep up the great work to bring sustainability education to your school.  Your hard work and dedication to the Dream in Green program is what makes our success possible, and ultimately is what will ensure that our next generation is able to become the change-makers for our planet.  Below you will find some important updates, deadlines and opportunities for your students--as well as the schools who are currently leading the Challenge!  As always, please call us at 786-574-4909 or email any of our staff if you have questions about implementing the Dream in Green Academy.

In this season of celebration and thanks, we hope you know how grateful we are for your efforts and commitment to the Dream in Green Academy and all that you do everyday to educate our youth.

Warm wishes for a wonderful holiday!

The Dream in Green Team
Congratulations to our leading schools!
There's still time to submit your activities to receive points.
The Dream in Green Academy's midyear meeting for teachers will be rescheduled since the original date is no longer a teacher planning day for MDCPS. In lieu of an in-person meeting, Dream in Green will host an interactive webinar to provide teachers the chance to ask questions and plan for the winter semester.  Date and details to follow!
Has your school completed the 2017 Monthly Challenge activities?  Remember to email all from September through December to Alexandra Ender (  by  December 31st  in order to earn points for the activities completed.

Tips & Tricks!
Try these ideas to lessen your footprint this holiday season:
  • Many of us travel far distances for the holidays, packing a big carbon footprint.  A round-trip coach ticket from Miami to NYC is about 1.5 metric tons of carbon.  Keep in mind that the average person's annual carbon footprint is about 18 MT of carbon dioxide. You can calculate the carbon footprint of your holiday travel plans and offset your flight's carbon footprint with many major airlines (United, Delta) or you can purchase offsets directly with the Carbon Fund.
  • Get creative with gift wrapping and try Furoshiki, the art of Japanese cloth gift wrapping.
  • Dispose of your tree at a facility where it will be chipped.  See Miami-Dade locations here.
  • Decorate with energy efficient LED strings.
  • Shop online or if you are going to go out shopping, take your own reusable bags.
  • Substitute one meat dish with a tasty vegetarian one.
  • Don't serve water bottles at dinner or parties.
  • Donate to an environmental/animal welfare organization instead of purchasing a gift that will end up in a landfill.
  • Buy used, purchase unique gifts from eBay, Caigslist, Etsy or Goodwill (you never know what you can find!)
