DREAMING OF SUMMER WITH SCOPE IN DECEMBER
To kick off our final month of SCOPE spotlights, we're highlighting individuals, camps, and organizations that are doing their part to make children's dreams of overnight summer camp a reality!
BARI MARGOLIS AND
SCOTT FREEMER
SCOPE Associate Board Members
SCOPE is beyond lucky to have
Camp Westmont young professionals Bari Margolis and Scott Freemer engaged in various efforts to support SCOPE’s mission!

It’s wonderful that from a very young age Bari knew camping was what she wanted to do with her life. We're sure she developed some great camp trunk packing skills from her childhood summers at Camp Blue Ridge as she was a whiz when it came to helping pack event boxes and golfer giveaway boxes as a volunteer at the last two SCOPE Golf Tournaments! Her can-do attitude is infectious and she brings a feel-good energy to SCOPE’s young professionals events and Associate Board efforts.
Scott started attending overnight summer camp at age 7 and has been involved in overnight camps ever since. In his role as the SCOPE Associate Board Fundraising Chair he inspires and supports other members through his creative thinking and innovative ideas. Plus, he keeps everyone smiling with his great sense of humor! Now a father, Scott and his wife Melissa are eagerly counting down the days until their daughter Summer gets to be a Westmont camper!
Thank you to Bari, Scott, the Moskowitz family, and the Camp Westmont community for their dedication to making camp accessible for all children through their ongoing dedication to supporting SCOPE!
DEREK MISHKIN
SCOPE Mitzvah Project
In November '21 Derek Mishkin and 26 of his middle school and Camp Equinunk friends came together for the first ever flag football game to benefit SCOPE as a part of Derek's Bar Mitzvah Project. Before the game started, Derek spoke to his friends/players about his project, the importance of SCOPE, and why he chose SCOPE as the focus of his efforts. Everyone had so much fun –- players sported t-shirts with the SCOPE logo as their uniforms (obviously gray and red -– Equinunk colors!) and afterwards they celebrated with munchkins and hot chocolate.

For Derek, he has found it rewarding to be involved in raising funds for his Mitzvah Project, especially for a cause he cares so deeply about. Both of Derek's parents are deeply rooted in their love for camp, as his mom Rachel is a longtime camp Camp Blue Ridge staff member and his dad Danny created and operates Sababa Surf Camp!

Derek's hope is for children receiving SCOPE support to experience making lifelong friends and to find a place where they can truly be themselves, similar to his own camp experiences. Derek knows how truly lucky he is to have had the opportunity to spend his last six summers at camp! Thank you Derek and the Mishkin family for making camp accessible for at least 2 more children this summer!

We congratulate Derek and his family as he becomes a Bar Mitzvah this Saturday, December 11. Mazel Tov!
SCOPE Partner Camp Double Feature!
YMCA Camp Hi-Rock, Massachusetts
SCOPE Northeast
Nestled in 1,000 acres of the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts, YMCA Camp Hi-Rock enjoys a truly magnificent location. While at Hi-Rock, campers learn to act as stewards not only of the camp’s natural setting, but of the global environment in which they live. They see each camper as a unique individual with his or her own needs, aptitudes, and interests, which can be further developed through the camping experience. The SCOPE staff were fortunate enough to visit Hi-Rock this past summer and see campers cultivate new skills, develop healthy lifestyles, create meaningful relationships, and become more caring, honest, respectful and responsible people.
YMCA Camp Minikani, Wisconsin
SCOPE Midwest
At YMCA Camp Minikani, returning campers often describe camp as their second home, mostly because they feel a sense of ownership and comfort while at camp. Minikani campers are assigned age-appropriate responsibilities and as a result develop confidence in themselves and their practiced behaviors. In addition, campers claim their independence by making daily choices regarding their interests and relationships. Minikani prides itself in being a place where campers take ownership of their identity and shine in ways that suit their personality best.
