Lendon's Youth Dressage Festival 2019 - Calling All Volunteers
|
Come help with the show, for a few hours or a few days!
|
Ali Brock - Olympian and D4K TEAM Clinic Instructor
|
Olympian Ali Brock is teaching a Dressage4Kids TEAM Program Clinic later this month at Prince George's Equestrian Center in Maryland.
Auditors are welcome.
Read a little bit about Ali in this article from
Sidelines Magazine!
By Britney Grover
Ali knows how to push past doubt, forge opportunities and become the very best. Now, she's using her skills and experience to help others make that same journey, both as a trainer and as a partner with US Equestrian.
"If you want to be excellent, you have to put yourself in a position to be mentored and exposed to and trained by people who are themselves excellent," she shared.
To that end, Ali is helping not just her own students but U.S. riders through US Equestrian. She was elected Equestrian Representative for the Athletes Advisory Council, a go-between for the U.S. Olympic Committee, the athletes and US Equestrian.
Ali has a few working students, and supports youth dressage programs such as Lendon Gray's Dressage4Kids, which she feels is key to continuing the momentum of U.S. dressage success - creating lifelong riders.

Attention All Youth Dressage Festival Competitors
|
ATTENTION Youth Dressage Festival Competitors! We're looking forward to LYDF 2019 at HITS on the Hudson!
Please keep in mind the following updates and changes:
- The welfare of the horse comes first. Riders and trainers are responsible for ensuring that their horses are sound and fit enough for competition.
- No riding until you have checked in with the show office and have your number.
- There will be a trainers forum with Lendon Gray on Friday evening during the written test. The forum is for trainers only and we encourage all trainers to attend.
- There are no prerequisites to enter in the Sport Horse classes (the Handler Class and the Judging Sport Horse Conformation Class).
-If you are entered in one or both of the Sport Horse classes and you are also riding a dressage test during the Friday schooling show, your dressage test will be scheduled in the morning as a Test of Choice in order to try to avoid scheduling conflicts.
-Margaret Freeman will be conducting a "Ride on the Side" during Friday's schooling show during which she will commentate on the rides in the schooling show.
- Teams can include walk/trot division riders.
- For safety reasons barn aisles must be kept clear (NO bikes and tables) and there has to be plenty of room for two horses to pass one another. Keep your tack and all barn equipment in your tack stall and out of the aisles. It is at the discretion of Dressage4Kids and its volunteers to mandate that you move something for safety reasons. Dressage4Kids volunteers will be overseeing the safety of the aisles.

Hayley Baker's Interview with Olivia LaGoy-Weltz
|
I asked her how she has handled rough patches along the way, and she said, "It's about looking for what's to be learned in that situation, and what can be done differently."
I asked her what some of her favorite things about Lono are, and she giggled as her face lit up. What a great reminder that even at the highest level these horses are our best friends. Lono and Olivia exemplify that so well. Their partnership is beautiful, and they clearly love each other. To answer my question she said, "I like how very snuggly he's become, and his big personality. He was quite introverted and skittish when he first came, and it's still in there to be that way, so it's really that he has his people that he trusts. He's really intelligent and a super fun horse to train."
Pieces of advice for young pros:
Try to find the right situation, surround yourself with people who enjoy learning and passing on knowledge. If you're a talented rider it's your responsibility to pass that on and put in the work to be able to put words to it.

In April, I received an education grant from ESDCTA and I used part of it to pay for a clinic with Lendon Gray that was held May 11-12 at the beautiful Rhythm & Blues Equestrian Center in Quakertown PA. This clinic was part of the Dressage4Kids TEAM Program, and this was my third such clinic.
We riders must always make consideration of the host property one of our top priorities when attending events such as this. I also want to make sure that my horse partner has time to acclimate before an event.
So, what did I learn? Here is some feedback that was fairly consistent for all or most of the riders, including me:
- One of the most important building blocks of dressage is a forward moving horse that responds to your leg and seat quickly. To achieve more upper-level movements such as half-pass, forward power from the hind end is a must. This does not mean that the horse is running. It means that the horse has upward thrust from behind (which creates a strong topline).

Potentially available through the Dressage4Kids Horse Donation Program:
Wally is a 16.3 hand 10 year old gelding. He has excellent ground manners and always tries to please his rider. He's currently at first level, schooling 2nd level movements. He moves nicely off your leg and has good gaits. Wally is social and sweet and very trainable. He likes to work and has a great attitude. Contact
Lendon Gray for more info.
