MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
|
|
France in 2024!!
Greetings Dreuxites:
The March 2022 reunion in New Orleans was a huge success and everyone was pleased to be able to interact with old and new friends and enjoy Southern hospitality, sightseeing, great food, spirits, and dancing.
Helen Miles (‘61) and the Reunion Committee did an outstanding job that made the reunion successful and Howard Smith (‘65) took pictures of the reunion that Vicki Key (‘67) is making available to everyone interested. Even if you did not attend the reunion, the pictures should be of interest to you and may even encourage you to go to future reunions.
For the 2024 Reunion, plans are definite for an 8-day river cruise from Paris to Normandy and back. The dates are October 10-17, 2024. There are currently 33 people that have registered for the river cruise. If you are interested (and have not already contacted me) please visit the Dreux AHS Alumni website for more details on the cruise. Once you have registered with Viking and paid your deposit, please let me know via email at krausman@arizona.edu so I can keep track of who is going. Viking cannot divulge the names of those who register due to their privacy policies.
I look forward to a great time back in our old stomping grounds! I hope you will be able to join us.
Enjoy the rest of the newsletter that is chocked full of news and information. If you know of an alumnus that is not a member of the association, ask them to join. We want to have as many alumni on board (for the 2024 reunion and others) as possible! Until later.
Paul R. Krausman
President, Dreux American High School Association

Susan Vogel Venable '61
I was originally from upstate New York; moved to Virginia when my father took a federal job. His work eventually allowed the family to move overseas. I was the oldest of 3 children; siblings were a brother and sister. We lived in Cyprus for 2 years.
My overseas schooling started with Reform Presbyterian Missionary School for Girls in Nicosia, Cyprus. I didn't thrive and my parents found that another family had a daughter in school at Dreux AFB. I finished my senior year of high school at Dreux and attended the American University of Beirut in Lebanon for my freshman year of college. After our tour of duty, we returned to Virginia and I finished college at the American University of Washington, D.C.
After graduation I married David Hart and we had two children, son David and daughter Carey. Now, many years later, I am married to George Venable, and my children have gifted me with 5 grandchildren. Recently great-grandchildren have appeared on the scene, three so far, two more on the way. I enjoy seeing my family grow and change.
I spent some years creating and painting porcelain dolls, moved on to sculpture in polymer clays. I spent some time assisting second graders with reading and math practice. I took piano lessons for awhile - sometimes I do some sewing. I think I'm a dilettante rather than being accomplished at any one thing.

Work Life:
Graphic artist, editor, eventually Branch Head, Technical Information Services at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
Favorite memories from Dreux:
- The senior class end of year variety show
- Seeing a French movie on the economy with Ms. Valenzuela's class, Jacques Le Ventreur (Jack the Ripper). She was horrified!
- Roommate Betty Tabor and other friends Olivia Ball, Steve Lee and Gerri Foster

Glen Johnson '65
My father retired from the Air Force as a staff sergeant. We lived in Florida, Louisiana, Turkey, France and South Carolina. We weren't poor, but we were close, once living in a 28x8 foot trailer. We were always happy and we were all very clever, mechanical and smart, so that helped.
Attended Dreux 1963-65. Following graduation in 1965, I attended Coastal Carolina College in Conway, SC, the University of Texas at Austin, and University of Texas Law School.
I worked in journalism following college and covered the Apollo moon landings for United Press International before returning to law school. I became a trial lawyer and represented individuals, companies, and legendary, wealthy Texas families for more than 40 years. I retired in 2016.
A wonderful Texas woman agreed to marry me and our 52 years together have taken us around the World. We became private pilots and I took up flying antique and World War II military aircraft for fun and at air shows. We were invited to fly off the USS Carl Vinson in Hawaii on the 50th anniversary of VJ Day, so we became the only civilian couple crew to operate our own aircraft off of a nuclear aircraft carrier. Later, my wife fell in love with Africa and summited Kilimanjaro. We returned for three tented hunting safaris and faced off with lions and cape buffalo at less than 20 yards, etc. She was rock solid, every time. We also chartered a vintage DC3 from South African Airways Historic Flight and toured southern Africa for three unbelievable weeks, landing on grass strips and camping out in the bush. Good health and good fortune provided a life of incredible adventures. Later, for 8 years, we lived part of each year on our 50-foot trawler.
|
|
We are now retired in the Fort Worth area and travel often in a motor home, mostly to and from our summer home in Maine. We have owned Hyde Island in Moosehead Lake and a magnificent historic lodge for 26 years. We owned an incredible German shepherd for almost 12 years. We chose to skip having children in favor of living life as we chose.
Favorite Memories of Dreux:
- We lived off-base which provided a lot of freedom in a wonderful place
- Good friends: Robert Hazel, David Magill, Donna Howard, Charles "Chuck" Billings, Paul Francis, Alicia Hazel

CHECK OUT OUR DAHS ALUMNI SURVEY!
|
|
We have put together a survey that we would love everyone to complete. It will give us some great bio information for the Alumni Spotlight section of the newsletter and perhaps the Dreux website. It will let us know your thoughts about the newsletters and suggestions for improvements. There are also a couple of questions in the survey that might help us to locate some of your former classmates that have not been found yet!
A total of 32 alumni have completed the survey which is fantastic! I plan to include at least two bios in each newsletter. Please remember to send a "NOW" photo of yourself to Vicki Key if you complete a Bio Survey. Thanks!
We would like to have more bios! Complete yours today!

BECOME A MEMBER OF THE DREUX ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AND SUPPORT OUR EFFORTS
|
|
Dues are $40/yr and are based on a calendar year. You can pay for one year or for multiple years if you would like to do so.
The Dreux website reflects those that have paid dues for 2022 on the Dues page. For those that have paid for multiple years, that is reflected on the list as well so you will know how far out your dues are paid. (You may need to refresh the Dues page if it doesn't show the 2022 list when you first access the page)
Remember that you can pay dues by using a credit card through PayPal. Just visit our Dreux AHS website at www.dreuxalumni.org and click on the Dues/Donations button and you will see the Dues menu for PayPal.
If you prefer to pay by check, you can mail your Dues payment to our Treasurer:
Marilyn Hutto Turner '62
2015 Mount Forest Dr.
Kingwood, TX 77345
Dues paying members will receive a copy of our current Dreux AHS Alumni Directory via email.
As always, we GREATLY appreciate any and all support! Your support is what keeps our association going and helps fund the costs to find information on former classmates, maintain the database, website, newsletters, pre-reunion costs, etc. We can't do it without you!
THANKS to everyone for your past and hopefully your future support!!
|
|
NOTE: The board decided years ago that it was important to maintain a minimum bank balance of at least $10,000 so that future reunions can be planned.

|
UPDATING YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
|
|
As always, if your contact information has changed (i.e. email address, postal address, area code or telephone number) and you haven't notified me, please email that information to Vicki Key. I want to be sure that your contact information is correct in the Dreux AHS Alumni Directory and that we don't lose touch with you!
|
|
COME JOIN US ON FACEBOOK!
|
|
The Dreux American High School Group page on Facebook has been a lot of fun! We have 583 members in the group right now. Former friends have reconnected, uploaded photos from Dreux, and have general discussions about their time spent at Dreux. We also do New Find Alerts when we locate former classmates that have not yet been found as well as Sad News Alerts when we discover that former classmates or faculty/staff members have passed.
I have the group as a closed group so that only those people associated with Dreux are involved. If you are interested in joining us, just use the "request to join" feature on the FB Group Page or send me a friend request and I would be happy to add you!

Missed a prior Dreux AHS Newsletter?
You can view them on the Dreux website
|
|
In case you missed receiving any of the past Dreux AHS Newsletters for whatever reason, they are archived and available to view on our Dreux AHS website. There is a link on the front page of the website to access them.
(Note: It looks like the older newsletters that have been archived, did not retain the photos that were originally in the newsletter. Might have happened when Constant Contact changed the way they are now archived. Sorry about that!)
PLEASE remember that you can always opt out of receiving the newsletter if you would like, but PLEASE do not tag or report it as SPAM. That really hurts our ability to continue to do these newsletters using Constant Contact and there are many people who enjoy getting them. We certainly hope you don't opt out, but it is certainly your choice. I try not to overwhelm everybody with them, but keep in mind that just prior to Reunions, we may do them more than we normally do.

Dreux American High School was open from 1960-1967. The first graduating class was 1961. The school closed in January of 1967. We have a very active Alumni Association. There have been 11 major reunions since that first get-together organized by Reunions Unlimited in Dallas in 1993. The last reunion was held in March of 2022 in New Orleans. Upcoming Reunion is France in 2024!
