MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Back to France!

The Olympics in Paris are over for 2024, and the scenes transmitted from that familiar city to observers around the world made me want to get our next reunion going. About 30 have signed up for the cruise from Paris to Normandy on Viking River Cruises (what else?) that begins October 9. This will be our 12th major reunion since 1995.  Several folks have made plans to arrive before the cruise and others to stay for a while after the cruise to check out areas they are interested in. It will be a reunion not to be forgotten--especially since it is the 80th anniversary year of the landing in Normandy and the 31st year since our Alumni Association was created.

In relation to reunions, the question arises as to when should we have another one? Here is the list of locations for past reunions with Nevada and Texas being most selected sites. Every reunion was a success and enjoyed by all that attended!

1995 - Las Vegas, NV

1997 - Dallas, TX

2000 - Las Vegas, NV

2004 - Atlanta, GA (with Overseas Brats)

2007 - Las Vegas, NV

2010 - Reston, VA (with Overseas Brats)

2013 - Orlando, FL

2015 - San Antonio, TX

2017 - Charleston, SC

2019 - San Antonio, TX

2022 - New Orleans, LA

2024 - France 2024 River Cruise from Paris to Normandy

Please send me your comments and opinions of where and when you would like the next reunion to be so the board can plan accordingly. It will be stateside and should be in a location that is easily accessible to alumni. I am up for any place in the good ole USA. Meeting with alumni from Dreux is always a good time.

I would also like you to consider running for one of the offices that keep the Alumni Association going. They are challenging and fulfilling positions that keep you abreast of the great alumni from Dreux. Give it some thought and drop me an email if you are interested (krausman@arizona.edu). I look forward to hearing from you about all matters related to Dreux.

Au revoir pour l’instant

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS

Hans-Peter "Pete" Haugh '62

Pete was literally born within a war zone. He has lived through the wrath of the world and had nearly lost his life as a result.

Pete was born January 25, 1944 in Bremen, Germany to his mother Helga and father Gustav Melsa. His father was in the German Infantry servicing on the Russian front and was killed August 28, 1943, never seeing Pete or knowing he had a son.

At the age of about six to eight months old Pete, his mother and grandmother were going grocery shopping (walking to the store, which was very routine). Pete was in a baby buggy nestled in pillows all around him, as mother, grandmother and Pete were walking under a railroad trestle as a group of B-17s bombers were making a bomb run on some target in Bremen and their bombs hit the location where Pete, his mother and grandmother were; burying them in the rumble. All three were dug out and survived. So, I guess you could say Pete is a WWII combat veteran.

Pete’s mother re-married an American service man and came to the United States in 1950 and Pete joined her and his new step-father in 1951 at Holloman AFB, Alamogordo, NM. Pete was adopted by his Stepfather in 1952 and became a Naturalized Citizen in 1953.

Pete and his family lived in many different places during his life, as his Father retired from the Air Force after 27 years of service.

Pete and his parents were stationed at Perrin AFB from 1956 to 1961; Pete attended Sherman Schools thru his junior year of High School, as his father was being transferred to France. His senior year was in Dreux France at an American DOD High School. His graduating class of 50 held their senior prom on the Eiffel Tower, Paris France.

After high school Pete spent some time in France and worked on Evreux Air Force Base in the NCO and Officers clubs. In the NCO club Pete was the Head Waiter and at the Officers Club he was a Night Cashier in the office as well as Special Events Head Waiter and VIP Waiter (provide private service to visiting Generals and other Dignitaries).

Then in June of 1964 Pete enlisted in the Air Force at Evreux AFB and took his basic training at Lackland AFB, where he was promoted to Dorm Chief/Flight Leader after only a week. Pete was a computer and crypto technician while in the Air Force and had jobs ranging from Team Lead to NCOIC of Wire Maintenance shop in Iceland and supervisor of the com shop in Thailand. He was promoted to E-4 June 1966 and E-5 Dec. 1968.

During his 8 years of service he was stationed at Lackland AFB, Sheppard AFB, McClellan AFB, Keesler AFB, Rockville Air Station Iceland, and Upon Royal Thai Air Force Base Thailand.

Pete married Lois his wife of 58 years on October 2, 1965. They have a son Kristopher Haugh USN Retired, daughter Rebecca Radcliff and granddaughter Megan Radcliff.

Ann Bailey (Berman) '66

(attended Dreux during the 63/64 school year)

My father was a Naval air pilot. Both of my parents were from Baton Rouge, LA and it was always clear that this was where I was from. When they married, they immediately moved to Cape Cod where my father had been transferred. I was born at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. We then moved to Jacksonville FL, Memphis TN, and Norfolk VA. From there, we moved to Port Lyautey, Morocco followed by Rota, Spain. Then on to New Iberia, Louisiana where my father worked at the new anti-submarine base.

While in the ninth grade, we were transferred to West Malling, Kent, England. My much younger sister and two brothers were able to attend British schools but at my age, it was almost impossible for me to transfer to a local English school. So in the ninth grade, after already attending two schools in the US, I went to Lakenheath Junior High where there was a 7 day boarding program. The 7 day program was closed at the end of my freshman year so it was for that reason that I was transferred to Dreux for my sophomore year. After my sophomore year, my family was transferred north to Mildenhall, Suffolk, England where I could be a 5 day boarder at Lakenheath. I went there for my junior and senior years. At that point I had changed schools thirteen times.

When we were transferred or my father went on temporary duty, my family moved back to Baton Rouge where I went to school. The summer after my high school graduation, my family moved to NAS Pensacola, Fl while I went to college in Louisiana and began studying sociology and statistics. I loved it there and was able to become active in a number of social and civic organizations. My father retired from the service the month after my college graduation. They then moved to Baton Rouge where he became the air pilot for 5 governors. I went on and got a Masters Degree focused on broadcasting while teaching speech and radio broadcasting at LSU. Then started working full time.

My career has been full of change. My first job was to work in the newsroom of WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge. While there, was promoted to a news reporter. Then worked as Chief Spokesperson for the LA Division of Mental Health and LA Division of Human Services. At that point I dropped out to travel around the world primarily via train and bus for a little over a year; the goal had been to travel for a few weeks and then go back to Paris to find a job but we just kept going east until it was west of the US. Upon my return and having to start life over, I moved to Boston. There I first worked at Cambridge Research Institute as a research associate, then as chief spokesperson for the MA Department of Public Health while working on my MBA. After graduating, moved on to work for American Cablesystems and became VP of Franchising.

The majority of my professional career has been at Chadwick Martin Bailey (CMB). This is the firm that I co-founded with my partner John Martin, a professor of mine at BU. I was CEO there for 32 years. It is now one of the top 50 market information consulting firms in the US.

In my spare time, I like to travel, do photography, garden and now, am learning to draw. After years of living in Winchester, we moved into a condo in Boston, have a house on Cape Cod and go to south Louisiana as much as I can. I have always been interested in civic activities. We get three paper newspapers and two solely online.

From the time that I graduated from college, I have been active in nonprofit organizations. In Baton Rouge, I chaired a committee that initiated the Baton Rouge Rape Crisis Center. In Boston, these include such boards as the Old North Foundation which I chaired for many years, the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology which I also chaired for many years, the Children's Trust, and Technology Goes Home. Most of my interest revolves around helping children and youth find life paths through education and support.

While in Boston, in 1982 I married Roger Berman and thus stayed here. Roger and I had two sons. Sam is living in New Orleans and Lee is in Kansas City, Mo. All three work independently in real estate. We have two grandchildren.

Some Memories from Dreux:

  • The people and how I was embraced as a new student
  • Loved my roommates and friends
  • Roommates were Sharon Smith and Barbara Lee
  • Best friends were Sharon Smith, Barbara Lee, Mickey Doak, Bill Douglas and Eddie Langston
  • Dated: Mickey Doak
  • Remember when Bill Douglas and I sneaked out of a program at the Paris Opera House and walked around Paris and the aftermath when President Kennedy was assassinated

Dues are $40/yr and are based on a calendar year. You can pay for one year or for multiple years if you would like to do so.

The Dreux website reflects those that have paid dues for 2024 on the Dues page. For those that have paid for multiple years, that is reflected on the list as well so you will know how far out your dues are paid. (You may need to refresh the Dues page if it doesn't show the 2024 list when you first access the page)

Remember that you can pay dues by using a credit card through PayPal. Just visit our Dreux AHS website at www.dreuxalumni.org and click on the Dues/Donations button and you will see the Dues menu for PayPal.

If you prefer to pay by check, you can mail your Dues payment to our Treasurer:

Dues paying members will receive a copy of our current Dreux AHS Alumni Directory via email.

As always, we GREATLY appreciate any and all support! Your support is what keeps our association going and helps fund the costs to find information on former classmates, maintain the database, website, newsletters, pre-reunion costs, etc. We can't do it without you!

THANKS to everyone for your past and hopefully your future support!!

TREASURER'S REPORT
NOTE: The board decided years ago that it was important to maintain a minimum bank balance of at least $10,000 so that future reunions can be planned.

UPDATING YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
As always, if your contact information has changed (i.e. email address, postal address, area code or telephone number) and you haven't notified me, please email that information to Vicki Key. I want to be sure that your contact information is correct in the Dreux AHS Alumni Directory and that we don't lose touch with you!
COME JOIN US ON FACEBOOK!
The Dreux American High School Group page on Facebook has been a lot of fun! We have 586 members in the group right now. Former friends have reconnected, uploaded photos from Dreux, and have general discussions about their time spent at Dreux. We also do New Find Alerts when we locate former classmates that have not yet been found as well as Sad News Alerts when we discover that former classmates or faculty/staff members have passed.

I have the group as a closed group so that only those people associated with Dreux are involved. If you are interested in joining us, just use the "request to join" feature on the FB Group Page or send me a friend request and I would be happy to add you!

If you are on Facebook and have not already joined the group, here is the link to our page so you can request to join:Dreux American High School Facebook Group

In case you missed receiving any of the past Dreux AHS Newsletters for whatever reason, they are archived and available to view on our Dreux AHS website. There is a link on the front page of the website to access them.

(Note: It looks like the older newsletters that have been archived, did not retain the photos that were originally in the newsletter. Might have happened when Constant Contact changed the way they are now archived. Sorry about that!)

PLEASE remember that you can always opt out of receiving the newsletter if you would like, but PLEASE do not tag or report it as SPAM. That really hurts our ability to continue to do these newsletters using Constant Contact and there are many people who enjoy getting them. We certainly hope you don't opt out, but it is certainly your choice. I try not to overwhelm everybody with them, but keep in mind that just prior to Reunions, we may do them more than we normally do.

For those that may have opted out in the past, you can always rejoin anytime by visiting the Dreux AHS website and clicking on "Join Our Dreux AHS Mailing List". We would love to have you back in the loop!
