Federal funding helps schools carry more students – not more costs
The 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law committed $5 billion to the Environmental Protection Agency to fund a program replacing aging diesel school buses with environmentally friendly alternatives. And while many administrators are talking about the program in terms of electric buses, the Clean School Bus program also allocates funding for alternative fuel vehicles and near-zero-emission vehicles, including school buses powered by propane autogas. For many districts around the country, propane school buses are a more viable option than electric vehicles because they offer a lower total cost of ownership while still reducing greenhouse gas emissions and giving students a safe, healthy ride to school.

Lightning Day events a huge success
We were happy to spend time with our co-host Lightning eMotors at their two Lightning Day events this month at NIRPC in Portage and Lincolnland Economic Development in Rockport. These events were a great way to learn all about electrification and to network with stakeholders who all have the same goal: to make our Earth a better place. Attendees had the opportunity to ride or drive in their zero-emission, medium-duty commercial vehicles. Thank you again to our co-hosts, site hosts and attendees for two great events!

Opinion: Support sustainable transportation to further economic development
Whenever anyone has to make an investment of any kind, large or small, they have to ask themselves the question, “What’s in it for me?” One thing that binds us all is money. Whether it is the household budget for an individual consumer, the budget for a small family-owned business, a large corporation, a local city, the state or the feds, everyone wants to increase income and reduce spending. We know that sustainable transportation options including alternative fuel and electric vehicles and their fueling and charging options provide excellent long-term returns on investment and significant cost savings over traditional gasoline and diesel options, especially now with gas and diesel prices at all-time highs.

Member Spotlight: bp
bp -- with international headquarters in London and North American headquarters in Houston -- has been a Platinum Level Drive Clean Indiana member since 2021. bp is an integrated energy business with operations in Europe, North and South America, Australia, Asia and Africa. In 2020, bp set its ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner and to help the world get to net zero. This ambition is supported by 10 aims: five to help bp become a net zero company and five to help the world get there, too. Together, they set out a path that bp believes is consistent with the Paris goals. In February 2022, bp provided an update on its progress against its three strategic focus areas: resilient hydrocarbons, convenience and mobility and low carbon energy.

Featured Technology: Hydrogen
Hydrogen (H2) is a potentially emission-free alternative fuel that can be produced using domestic resources. Although not widely used as a transportation fuel, government and industry researchers are working on the advancement of clean economical and safe hydrogen production and fuel-cell electric vehicles. Hydrogen is locked up in enormous quantities in water (H2O), hydrocarbons (such as methane, CH4) and other organic matter. Efficiently producing hydrogen from these compounds is one of the challenges of using hydrogen as a fuel.
