Message from the Board Chair:

Kenneth Hernandez, Board Chair

Dear Drive Electric Florida Community,

Although our weather did not receive the memo, Fall has officially started! As each of us looks ahead to holiday plans, end-of-year goals, and where to try squeezing in some last-minute vacation time, our DEFL team is hard at work finalizing plans for our Annual Membership Meeting coming up later this week in Orlando. Many thanks to Orlando Utilities Commission for graciously hosting us!

National Drive Electric Week has come and gone once again, but there are still many events happening around the state. We encourage all of our members to support a local event through participation or attendance, or share with friends, family and colleagues. We have listed below several of these events that are fantastic opportunities to engage directly with EV drivers to get real-world answers to their EV questions, or hear about the EV-related pain points Floridians may be experiencing. As we gear up for another legislative session, we may be able to serve as a conduit to share those experiences with our elected officials and policymakers.

As is usually the case, there is much for us to stay tuned into, and we hope you will join us in Orlando for updates on what we are tracking and working on, but also so we can hear the same from you.

Keep safe through what remains of our current hurricane season and thank you for your continued support of Drive Electric Florida!

Kenneth Hernandez

Biden-Harris Administration Announces $90 Million to Accelerate Building Code Adoption and Save Americans Money

As part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced $90 million in competitive awards to help states, cities, Tribal Nations, and their partners implement updated energy codes for residential and commercial buildings. Funded by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, these awards will support 25 new projects across the country to help ensure buildings meet the latest standards for energy efficiency—lowering energy bills for American families and businesses while reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions and advancing environmental justice. Analysis from several DOE National Labs shows that building energy codes make the electric grid more resilient and help save lives during extreme weather events and extended power outages.

Along with the $240 million in new funding recently selected through the Inflation Reduction Act to support the implementation of modern building codes, today’s announcement underscores the Biden-Harris Administration’s whole-of-government approach to lowering energy costs and ensuring communities are more resilient to extreme weather events fueled by climate change.

“The Biden-Harris Administration continues to use all the tools at our disposal to lower energy costs to keep more money in the pockets of working families,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “Thanks to the President's Investing in America agenda, DOE is providing unprecedented assistance to states, cities, and Tribal Nations to implement modern building codes—delivering healthier, safer, and more resilient communities while slashing energy bills for families and businesses across the country.”

FPL & National Drive Electric Week

FPL celebrates National Drive Electric Week with continued growth of its public charging network and residential charging solutions

National Drive Electric Week kicked off September 27 with tremendous growth in EV adoption across the Sunshine State. According to recent data from IHS Markit, Florida is currently ranked second in the nation in EV adoption, with more than 304,000 EVs registered in the state, a 21% increase over last year. Florida Power & Light Company supports its customers’ growing demand for electric vehicles by providing holistic charging solutions at home, at work and on the road.

In 2024 alone, FPL commissioned 30 new fast charging sites, with locations from South Florida to Pensacola, including Miami, West Palm Beach, Saint Augustine, Pensacola and Destin, among others. Additional sites are expected to come online before the end of the year.

FPL EVolution public fast-charging sites make it easy for EV drivers to stay charged up on the road, with most batteries being able to charge up in about 30 minutes. With FPL’s fast charging network, drivers can power up approximately every 30 to 50 miles along highways such as Florida’s Turnpike, I-95 and other major highways – as well as less-traveled roads. In fact, installing a public charger comes at no cost to site hosts and EV chargers are a great amenity as about 90% of EV drivers make a purchase while their vehicle is charging.

“From start to finish, working with Florida Power & Light to bring EV chargers to Fudpuckers has been a delight,” says Chester Kroeger, owner of the Fudpuckers Beachside Bar & Grill in Destin, FL. “They are helping us bring a much needed and top-quality EV charging station to the Destin area.”

With more than 80% of charging happening at home, FPL also realizes it’s critical to help EV drivers charge up conveniently and affordably at home, so they are ready to go the next morning. FPL EVolution Home is a subscription-based program that provides EV drivers unlimited off-peak charging on weeknights, weekends and holidays – all starting at $31 a month.

FPL is also fostering the next generation of STEM leaders and EV drivers with its support of educational programs like Electrathon. FPL donates EV build kits and provides training and tools to high school students and their educators across Florida. With the company’s support, they can build and race the most efficient electric go-kart – with the objective being which car can travel the longest, not the fastest.

Learning electric car-building skills helps spark students’ interest in EVs and STEM-related career fields and helps them learn about the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

“Knowing we were the catalyst for students to dive into STEM-related career fields after high school is incredible,” said Anuj Chokshi, director of development, mobility charging infrastructure for FPL. “We are advancing solutions on the road, at home and in the classroom in order to support the continued EV adoption throughout the state.”
