Good afternoon

Rhode Island is seeing a spike in traffic fatalities – 67 so far this year, whereas we had 44 fatalities at this point of the year in 2022. And one of our busiest travel periods – Thanksgiving – is right around the corner. Please drive carefully, don’t speed, avoid distraction, buckle up and never drive impaired.

Airport Connector, Warwick

We plan to pave along Post Road, requiring partial lane closures from Warwick Avenue to the Airport entrance, Sunday-Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Partial lane closures will also be necessary for daytime sidewalk and concrete work on Post Road, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Right shoulder closures for landscaping and sign work are also scheduled next week on both directions of I-95, between the Airport Connector on- and off-ramps, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Aquidneck Avenue, Middletown

Our daytime sidewalk construction continues weekdays from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., with alternating one-way traffic on Aquidneck Avenue, from East Main Road to Green End Avenue. We are still targeting completion by the end of the year. In addition to new sidewalks, we will deliver to the community new pavement, signing, striping, guardrail, and drainage.

Henderson Bridge, East Providence

The new Henderson Bridge is slated to open by the end of next week. On Friday, morning, November 17, we are scheduled to open it to westbound motorists, and on Monday morning, November 20, the following week, to eastbound motorists.

Prior to opening the bridge, we plan to finish guardrail installation while continuing electrical work for new highway lighting and new directional and regulatory signage installations. We will also continue building the second half of the Massasoit Avenue roundabout and add waterproofing to the shared-use path portion of the bridge. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, from 10 p.m.-5 a.m., we need to close Massasoit Avenue northbound at Wilmarth Avenue, and southbound at Broadway, to establish a new traffic pattern prior to opening the new bridge. Please follow signed detour.

I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Overnight alternating lane closures for bridge demolition are scheduled on both sides of I-95, from Exit 37A to Exit 39, Monday-Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The on-ramp from Atwells Avenue to I-95 North will also be closed Monday-Thursday nights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Daytime waterline work requires the closure of Park Street northbound, from Hayes Street to Smith Street, Tuesday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please follow signed detours during all closures.

Pell Bridge Ramps Phase 2, Newport

Overnight alternating one-way traffic for intersection work and paving is scheduled on JT Connell Highway, from Van Zandt Avenue to the JT Connell Highway Connector, Sunday-Wednesday nights from 8 p.m.-5 a.m. We’ll also have daytime lane shifts along the same stretch of JT Connell Highway for sidewalk, curb and electrical utilities installation, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shoulder closures may also be required for traffic signal work on JT Connell Highway at the RK Plaza, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, project crews will also be working on the off-road drainage swales, along the now closed “road to nowhere” and Admiral Kalbfus Road.

On Sunday night, we’re closing the right lane on Route 10 South at the Union Avenue off-ramp to install steel on the Route 6 East to Route 10 South ramp over Amtrak, from 8 p.m.-6 a.m. Weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., we’ll have alternating lane closures on Route 10 South, from 6/10 split to Westminster Street, and on Route 6 West, from the 6/10 split to Hartford Avenue. Operations will include adjusting the drainage structures in advance of paving Route 10 South and Route 6 West, building retaining walls adjacent to Route 10 North at the Westminster Street approach, and along the off-ramp to Union Avenue adjacent to Route 10 South.

Route 37 Improvements, Cranston/Warwick

Bridge Group 51A: Pontiac Avenue to Post Road (see photo, above)

We had a successful bridge slide this past weekend that required the closure of Route 37 East from Friday night, November 3 through Monday, November 6. We appreciated the patience and support of the motoring public throughout this process as we worked to put in place a brand-new bridge carrying Route 37 East over the Pawtuxet River.

Next week, we’ll have daytime alternating lane closures for curbing, sidewalk and drainage work along Pontiac Avenue, from Sockanosset Cross Road to Route 37 East, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bridge Group 51B: I-295 area (see photo, below)

Overnight and daytime bridge work at the Cranston Park West Bridge, carrying Route 37 East and West over I-295 South (overnight), the Cranston Street Bridge, carrying Route 37 East and West over Cranston Street (daytime), and the Cranston Street ramp, carrying the Route 37 ramp over Cranston Street (daytime) continues next week. Motorists can anticipate alternating lane closures on I-295 South in the vicinity of Route 37, Sunday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., and alternating one-way traffic with frequent vehicle access in/out of the work zone, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m.-4 p.m., for these operations.

Route 146, Lincoln/North Smithfield

Overnight and daytime bridge construction will be ongoing at this project next week, along with drainage installations, both requiring temporary road closures. These include the closure of Route 146, from Route 99 to Route 116, Sunday and Monday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., the Route 146 South Service Roads, from Route 99 to Route 116, Tuesday-Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Sayles Hill Road West, from Route 146 to Iron Mine Hill Road, Sunday-Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Please follow signed detours during all closures and check out our Travel Advisories web page for the latest updates.

Washington Bridge, East Providence/Providence

On Thursday night, we plan to install guardrail along I-195 West. This requires the overnight closures of Exit 1D (Gano Street) off I-195 West and the on-ramps from Veterans Memorial Parkway, Warren Avenue and Taunton Avenue to I-195 West, plus the right lane on I-195 West, from Broadway to South Main Street, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Please follow signed detour.
