JUNE 2019 | ISSUE 56
CFX’s Governing Board on June 13 voted unanimously to adopt a five-year, $2.5 billion work plan. The Five-Year Work Plan is part of CFX’s budget process and serves as an important tool for the agency to effectively manage its program of system improvements, enhancements, rehabilitation and expansion to CFX’s 118-mile expressway system. The plan also includes upgrades to CFX’s toll collection system, new customer relation management software, potential future expansion projects, and environmental sustainability initiatives. TRACKING VIRGIN TRAINS USA'S PLANS FOR ORLANDO
As ridership rates accelerate in South Florida, Virgin Trains USA is ramping up plans to extend the rail system 167 miles from West Palm Beach to Orlando. In an update briefing at CFX's June Board meeting, CFX Director of Engineering Glenn Pressimone and Adrian Share, Executive Vice President of Rail Infrastructure for Virgin Trains USA outlined proposals to connect Miami to Tampa. Virgin Trains USA is studying rail routes along the heavily-traveled SR 528, SR 417 and I-4 corridors to provide a rail connection between Orlando International Airport and Tampa. The CFX Board continues to work with Virgin Trains to identify the optimal route for both the local community and visitors to Central Florida.
POINCIANA PARKWAY EXTENSION ALTERNATIVE RECOMMENDED
In late May, Environmental and Project Advisory Groups reviewed and commented on the Poinciana Parkway Extension Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study team’s preferred alternative to extend the Poinciana Parkway to County Road 532. Alternative 5A without slip ramps to Ronald Reagan Parkway is the preferred alternative due to low social and natural impacts, cost effectiveness and high projected traffic volumes.

The study team will present Alternative 5A at a public hearing scheduled for Thursday, August 29, 5:30-8 p.m. at Poinciana High School. The CFX Governing Board is expected to decide whether to advance the preferred alternative to the design phase at its October 10 meeting.
PROJECT UPDATES
Resurfacing began on SR 528 between Innovation Way and SR 520 in east Orange County in June. Next month, crews will begin resurfacing SR 528 from SR 417 to Innovation Way.

More than 15 miles of the expressway will be resurfaced, with the project scheduled for completion by the end of 2019.

FDOT's flyover bridging is taking shape where I-4 and SR 408 join. New ramps, once complete, will eliminate the need for drivers to weave in and out of merging traffic to reach an exit or merge ramp.

The FDOT's work continues day and night, with their ramps scheduled to open by mid-2020.

IN THE COMMUNITY
CFX was one of more than 60 organizations that participated in the second annual Apopka Area Business Expo at the Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce in mid-May. CFX team members spoke with commuters benefitting from the Wekiva Parkway, a segment of SR 429 that extends into the Apopka area.

Wekiva Parkway connects drivers from US 441 to SR 46 in the Sorrento/Mt. Plymouth area, relieving traffic congestion on surrounding routes in this area. The CFX team reminded attendees that Wekiva Parkway utilizes all-electronic tolling, so drivers are encouraged to pay tolls with an E-PASS to save money rather than receiving a Pay By Plate toll invoice, which costs more.
