CFX ATTENDS WEKIVA PARKWAY COMMUNITY FESTIVAL

The Wekiva Parkway Community Festival was held on February 24 to commemorate the opening of the last segment in the beltway around Central Florida. The festival featured an opening ceremony with remarks from CFX’s Director of Transportation Planning & Policy, Will Hawthorne, a tree planting that showcased the environmental and community contributions made for this landmark infrastructure project, and the unveiling of a bronze plaque dedicated to the 30 years of regional collaboration.

The Wekiva Parkway connects State Road 429, State Road 417 and Interstate 4, completing a 25-mile toll road that aims to ease traffic congestion in Orange, Lake, and Seminole counties while protecting the natural resources in the fragile Wekiva River Basin. CFX completed work on our sections in April of 2018. To learn more about the Wekiva Parkway’s legacy achievements visit: wekivaparkway.com

ENHANCEMENTS TO THE WRONG-WAY DRIVING DETECTION AND PREVENTION SYSTEM CONTINUE ON SR 408, SR 417 AND SR 528

As part of our mission to ensure the safety of our customers, CFX began work on its Wrong-Way Driving Prevention Program in 2012 in partnership with the University of Central Florida. With this system, once a vehicle is detected driving the wrong way, two sets of flashing LED lights are triggered to alert the driver before reaching the expressway, giving them the chance and room to turn around. The system also triggers a series of cameras to take photos of the vehicle, which are transmitted to the Regional Traffic Management Center. Operators notify the Florida Highway Patrol and activate alerts on CFX’s overhead dynamic message signs to warn other drivers.

The first WWD detection system was installed in 2015. Currently, CFX has 55 WWD detection systems deployed on ramps throughout the 125-mile expressway system and 10 detection systems installed on the mainline.

CFX is continuing to invest in Phase 3 of the WWD Detection and Prevention system. Beginning in March 2024, there will be improvements and enhancements made to the existing wrong-way detection sites located at ramps to and from SR 408, SR 417 and SR 528. Work includes paving, sign and curb work, LED light replacements, new pavement messages and more. Work is scheduled to be completed by summer 2024. Click here to learn more.

NAVIGATING UNUSUAL RAINY WEATHER: A REMINDER TO DRIVE SAFELY

As an El Nino weather pattern continues to bring above-average rainfall and sometimes severe storms to Central Florida, here are some tips to help you stay safe when it’s raining. Safe driving always starts with ensuring your vehicle’s wiper blades, lights, turn signals, tires, brakes, and major components are in good working order. Beyond that, there are essential conscious decisions you can make to navigate through inclement weather safely.

A few things to consider:

  • Maintain a safe driving distance.
  • Avoid hard braking and sudden turns or lane changes.
  • Use your directional signals in advance.
  • Do not use your cruise control.
  • Slow down.

Whether it is a drizzle or a heavy rain, driving in inclement weather always requires a safe mindset and a conscious approach to driving.
