As part of our mission to ensure the safety of our customers, CFX began work on its Wrong-Way Driving Prevention Program in 2012 in partnership with the University of Central Florida. With this system, once a vehicle is detected driving the wrong way, two sets of flashing LED lights are triggered to alert the driver before reaching the expressway, giving them the chance and room to turn around. The system also triggers a series of cameras to take photos of the vehicle, which are transmitted to the Regional Traffic Management Center. Operators notify the Florida Highway Patrol and activate alerts on CFX’s overhead dynamic message signs to warn other drivers.
The first WWD detection system was installed in 2015. Currently, CFX has 55 WWD detection systems deployed on ramps throughout the 125-mile expressway system and 10 detection systems installed on the mainline.
CFX is continuing to invest in Phase 3 of the WWD Detection and Prevention system. Beginning in March 2024, there will be improvements and enhancements made to the existing wrong-way detection sites located at ramps to and from SR 408, SR 417 and SR 528. Work includes paving, sign and curb work, LED light replacements, new pavement messages and more. Work is scheduled to be completed by summer 2024. Click here to learn more.
