In CFX’s September Board meeting, CFX Director of Construction Ben Dreiling and Director of Engineering Will Hawthorne presented plans for a project that will expand and reconfigure the interchange at SR 528 and SR 436 to improve traffic flow in and around the Orlando International Airport.
The project includes new bridges and flyover ramps coupled with widening SR 528 to six lanes to enhance mobility and reduce delays during peak travel times. The project was designed to minimize any disruptions to the existing traffic flow around the airport during construction.
At their October meeting, the CFX Board will vote on a resolution identifying the SR 528/SR 436 Interchange Improvements Project as a Project of Critical Concern. This designation is reserved for projects of great magnitude, complexity and prominence with respect to Central Florida.
If approved, CFX will begin seeking qualification packages from contractors who meet specific criteria in the areas of safety, financial soundness, performance history, available resources and approach to the project, followed by requests for competitive low bids. The project is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2020.
