'Right to repair' farm machinery advocates urge Australian reform after US John Deere deal

The National Farmers' Federation has renewed calls for the federal government to reform laws to allow farmers the right to repair their own machinery. It comes after machinery manufacturer John Deere reached a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the American Farm Bureau Federation which granted expanded consumer rights to US farmers this week.

International backpackers return to farms for fruit harvests, boosting rural workforce


Backpackers have returned to Australia in force and farmers are happy with the boost to the rural workforce. More than 135,000 working holiday-makers arrived in Australia during 2022, and 25,000 visas have been granted since early December.

Food and Grocery Code of Conduct Review 2022-23


The Food and Grocery Code of Conduct was introduced in 2015 as a voluntary code under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010. The Government has now released a consultation paper for the review of the dispute resolution provisions in Part 5 of the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct.

The consultation paper includes questions that Treasury is interested in receiving stakeholder feedback on, to inform the review’s assessment of the effectiveness of the dispute resolution provisions.

Interested parties are invited to comment, with responses accepted until 01 February 2023. 

Please note that feedback should be limited to the dispute resolution provisions of the Code only. The next review of the Code in October 2023 will examine the remaining provisions of the Code.

An egg farmer in southern Western Australia is appealing for carers after dozens of chickens were burned in a devastating bushfire. Belinda O'Brien's farm was hit - and her partner Steve badly burned - when a bushfire in Glen Mervyn, south of Perth, jumped containment lines on Saturday, razing 6,000 hectares and destroying a home.

Churchill Fellowship information sessions

The Churchill Fellowship application round for 2023 opens in March, offering Australians from all walks of life the opportunity of funded travel overseas to investigate a topic or issue of their choice. Churchill Fellowships open doors so recipients can meet with leaders in their field of endeavour, observe, learn and then bring their new-found knowledge home to share with their industries and communities.

Up to three Hort Innovation Churchill Fellowships are on offer this year, and two free online information sessions are being held in February to inspire and inform potential applicants:

  • Agriculture and horticulture information session - Wednesday, 1 February at 5.15pm (AEST), hosted by former head of ABC Rural, Leigh Radford - register here;

Alan and Anita Blakemore started their Longview Olive Oil journey around 2000 when they planted 100 olive trees on their arable farm in the Opihi Valley, later buying a further 10 hectares of land in nearby Pleasant Point in 2001, and planting the first 200 trees on that property in 2002.

Food labels might curtail climate impact of U.S. fast food restaurants

New research investigated how American consumers react to climate-related food labels in fast food restaurants. The authors found that such labels affect consumer choices, which tend to become more sustainable.


And if enough consumers wanted sustainable products, maybe the restaurants would switch to using olive oil!

EU-US battle over Spanish olive tariffs at standstill

The European Commission will continue to abide by the divisive US tariffs on Spanish black olives, while EU lawmakers and Spanish producers are seeking more EU support with legal fees and losses.

Greece’s new CAP plan approved by European Commission


The European Commission has approved Greece’s national strategic plan, which aligns with the latest revision of the E.U.’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The new strategic plan, which started on January 1, 2023, is financed by the E.U. and Greece. €13.4 billion of European Union funds will be allocated for direct subsidies to Greek farmers over the next four years.

Tunisian olive oil prices keep climbing

 

The olive harvest in Tunisia is proceeding faster than in previous seasons. Still, the current 2022/2023 campaign will yield considerably less than last year, causing a significant rise in Tunisian olive oil prices.

Jordan's olive oil yield lower than expected


Jordan’s olive harvest is proceeding quickly, and the overall yield currently exceeds 22 thousand tons. According to Mahmoud Al-Omari, the local olive oil millers association representative, 90 percent of the olive harvest has been completed.
