recommends mandatory QR coding for API

India: The Union health ministry will make it mandatory for all active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) packages to be barcoded to detect spurious drugs and monitor imported and indigenously produced raw materials used to manufacture medicines.
APIs are critical components that make drug formulations potent against disease. There are about 2,500 APIs that are used to create hundreds of thousands of drug formulations.
“Raw material is usually supplied in bulk and its authenticity affects the final product. After the barcoding rule is implemented, the misuse of names and brands and sale of counterfeit drugs should come down significantly,” said Dr S Eswara Reddy, drugs controller general of India (DCGI).
On April 2, the drug and technical advisory board (DTAB) of the government recommended that provisions be included in the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, to make it mandatory to have QR coding on labels of APIs to trace their origin and movement from API manufacturers to drug manufacturers through a system of networking. WHO to develop policy on track-and-trace for pharma

Since 2014, the pharmaceutical international development community has promoted the use of global data standards to provide a wider and harmonized framework for supply chain visibility, strengthening anti-counterfeiting measures and sharing of data between parties. In the context of the 2030 target for UHC for all, the World Health Organization is welcoming the opportunities offered by Supply Chain technologies, such as Track&Trace or traceability, aiming at improving its efficiency and ultimately access to healthcare products. However, no proper global guidance has been provided so far to WHO Member States on how to address the numerous questions raised by the implementation of these technologies in the supply chain of healthcare products. WHO’s opinion is that a policy position is needed to advice Member States about the governance of the traceability systems handling product data (master data e.g. product name and variable data, e.g. batch/Lot number, expiry data, serial numbers, price). Data management would fall also in scope of the WHO policy position to advice on the multiple systems and standards used and the need to ensure when needed interoperability between the national and regional systems. With this respect, WHO welcomes the ICMRA initiative for a project on interoperability of Track and Trace (T&T) systems for medicines launched end of 2018, which WHO will contribute to as an observer. Drug control officers demands security

Punjab, India: The shocking murder of a young drug inspector inside her office at Kharar has sent shock waves among professionals in this field, who have stressed the need for adequate security. Calling drug inspectors vulnerable to threats, experts and a “demoralised” drug control fraternity have called for measures such as the wireless system, vehicles, security and a barbed fence around the office for them. Officials often conduct raids to keep a check on spurious drugs and illegal transit and sale of habit-forming drugs and intoxicants in the pharmaceutical business, which is on the rise. Thus, they face a big threat from those dealing in illegal activities, particularly from the drug mafia.

Volkswagen to track minerals sourcing via blockchain

Volkswagen
has announced
it is joining a blockchain initiative for responsible materials sourcing. Using blockchain will provide enhanced transparency into mineral supply chains. “Joining the collaboration will enable the Volkswagen Group to gain greater insight into the provenance of cobalt used in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and other types of minerals used elsewhere in the production of vehicles,” the press release reads. The platform was built on the IBM Blockchain Platform and is powered by the Linux Foundation's Hyperledger Fabric; it enables tracing the provenance of materials and makes the data available for all participants in the network. Other members include Ford Motor Company, Huayou Cobalt, IBM and LG Chem. The network is planning the expansion to other industries like aerospace, consumer electronics and mining operations. Oregon wine task force proposed to examine brand protection
|
|
A senate bill that would create the Oregon Winery and Winemakers Task Force was referred to the Ways and Means Committee. Senate Bill 111 was proposed at the request of the Senate Interim Committee on Business and Transportation to ensure winemakers meet certain label or branding criteria. The task force would investigate the laws, administrative rules and policies relating to wine or wine grapes to determine what would provide effective brand protection for Oregon wines and would dissolve Dec. 31 according to the amended bill.
