We received so many well-written submissions, but it was undeniable that the gripping poem titled "A Moment in Time" penned by Taamre Solen, shone the brightest. Solen is a 5th-grader and participant in AHC, Inc.'s resident service program

Congratulations again, Taamre!

We can't wait to hear you recite your poem on June 25!

Putting the Community Back in Community Development
Brought to you by Capital One

The GateBridge Community represents an innovative approach to mixed-income, mixed-use affordable housing - one that centers placemaking, closing the racial wealth gap, and building more diverse, inclusive, and equitable economies. GateBridge works in partnership with mission-aligned organizations to build permanently affordable, limited equity cooperative housing anchored by a community development incubator. By building bridges for renters to become resident-owners and employees to become worker-owners, GateBridge recycles income within the community and builds community wealth, leadership, and resilience in the process. This captivating discussion will examine the GateBridge model from the perspectives of its founder Professor Anthony Cook and the development, philanthropic, and investor partners needed to bring it to fruition.

A Conversation with Dr. Andre M. Perry | Know Your Price: Valuing Black Lives and Property in America’s Black Cities
Brought to you by Virginia Housing

The deliberate devaluation of communities of color has had very real, far-reaching, and negative economic and social effects. There is a longstanding myth claiming that brutal conditions in Black communities are mainly the result of Black people’s collective choices and moral failings. Dr. Andre Perry, a respected educator, journalist and scholar, reminds us that there is nothing wrong with Black people that ending racism can’t solve. For decades, we haven’t known how much the country will gain by properly valuing homes and businesses, family structures, voters, and school districts in Black neighborhoods. And there is no better time than the present to understand this information. Perry's most recent publication, Know Your Price: Valuing Black Lives and Property in America’s Black Cities, takes readers on a tour of six Black-majority cities whose assets and strengths are undervalued. Join us for an exciting and informative dialogue on his findings, a call to action for the real estate and community development industry post-pandemic; and how we can hold leadership accountable as we pursue more equitable outcomes in our communities.
