DRY NEEDLING. EVIDENCE-INFORMED PRACTICE.
|
The September issue of the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy features an outstanding study by Kietrys et al: Effectiveness of Dry Needling for Upper-Quarter Myofascial Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. After a thorough analysis of the current dry needling literature, the authors concluded "Based on the best current available evidence (grade A), we recommend dry needling, compared to sham or placebo, for decreasing pain immediately after treatment and at 4 weeks in patients with upper-quarter MPS [myofascial pain syndrome]." In 1997, Dr. Jan Dommerholt, PT, DPT and Dr. Robert Gerwin. MD introduced the first formal dry needling course in the US. Today, you have many choices where to study this remarkable treatment technique, but why would you consider any other option? Myopain Seminars is the company of choice for many national and local companies for in-house courses. Our clients include the Association of Tennis Professionals, the Women's Tennis Association, Physiotherapy Associates, and many state chapters of the American Physical Therapy Association, among many others.
Concerned about safety? No worries! Dr. Dommerholt participated in a prospective study of the risk of adverse events with dry needling with course graduates in Ireland. The study - Brady, S., McEvoy, J., Dommerholt, J. & Doody, C. 2013. Adverse events following dry needling: A prospective survey of Chartered Physiotherapists - will be published in the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy. Although some US acupuncture organizations have expressed that dry needling by physical therapists would constitute "a public health hazard", the study shows that the risk of a significant adverse event was less than 0.04% after analyzing nearly 8,000 dry needling treatment sessions!
