QUOTE ME, HOWIE
Steve Korby on Cloquet Country Club: 'Many people just plain love this course'
"Cloquet Country Club will be 100 years old in 2023. Initiated by Rudolf Weyerhaeuser and other Cloquet community leaders, the original nine hole design is attributed to famous golf course architect Donald Ross. It has survived through world wars and pandemics. The origins of the Cloquet Invitational are before the Masters was played at Augusta.
The back nine was designed, constructed and opened in 2001. Joel Goldstrand was the architect. The front nine was carved out of a pine forest, whereas the back nine is more deciduous trees and wetlands. Yet, it now is a seamless transition from front to back.
Bill Manahan, PGA professional, has been the club manager for many years and Jud Crist golf course superintendent. The course wins acclaim from its members (I’ve been one for over 50 years), tourney and event participants, and guests for its beauty and playability.

We have some of the nicest greens in the region.
Last year, John Sheff was the men’s club champion (he surpassed Butch Newby for the most career individual titles) and his daughter Arica Sheff was the women’s champ. Also, Sam Baker, a high school phenom, broke Don McKay’s course record by shooting a 62 on the par-71 course.
Volunteers have been a crucial factor in CCC's long success. Many people just plain love this course and devote hundreds of hours of their expertise -- whether on committees, board positions or just jumping in with grunt labor when needed.
Even with the pandemic, close to a record number of rounds were played at Cloquet Country Club in 2020."
