Women's Foundation Backs Safe Housing for Families Experiencing Homelessness

New security upgrades are underway at the Sybil Smith Family Village, thanks to generous funding from The Women's Foundation of Alabama and the Rotary Club of Mobile-Sunrise. Enhancements include a new perimeter fence and an electronic security gate, designed to create a secure and supportive space where families can focus on rebuilding their lives.

One resident shared, "It is comforting to know that the fence will add an extra layer of security for all of us. Feeling safe helps me concentrate on my goals and my path towards independence."

Kaitlee Daw, Senior Program Officer at the Women's Foundation of Alabama, stated, "We were proud to support the Sybil Smith Family Village. We were deeply impressed by their holistic approach to helping women and families thrive. This isn’t just a short-term solution—Sybil Smith offers an innovative, comprehensive model for transitional housing that meets critical needs while equipping women with the tools to achieve lasting economic mobility."

From the Hallways of Dumas Wesley to the U.S. State Capital

Last month, the Dumas Wesley Community Center welcomed Congressman Shomari Figures and his District Director, Andre Thomas, for a tour. Rep. Figures reflected on his personal connection to the Center, saying, "I went to daycare at Dumas Wesley as a child. It was great to be back and see the impact that they are still making in the community. From the senior services and the food pantry to the transitional housing programs, Dumas Wesley is still serving our community well. #ProudAlum."

2nd Annual Telethon Surpasses Goal, Raising $79,512!

Dumas Wesley Community Center's 2nd Annual Telethon was a tremendous success, raising a total of $79,512! Special thanks to Media Sponsor, WKRG, Corporate Sponsor, Poarch Band of Creek Indians, and the many generous donors who helped the Center exceed its $70,000 goal! Proceeds from the telethon will support Dumas Wesley’s flagship programs, benefiting local youth, senior citizens and women and children experiencing homelessness.

"Once again, WKRG was able to come through big time for Dumas Wesley Community Center’s Annual Telethon," said Jesse Grear, Vice President & General Manager of WKRG. "This will hopefully go a long way to help the Center continue their community efforts to make those in need feel good about themselves and live productive, meaningful, and happy lives. Thanks to all who donated," said Grear.

The Poarch Band of Creek Indians generously agreed to match every donation made during the telethon, dollar for dollar, up to $35,000. "The Poarch Creek Indians are committed to supporting organizations that share our values and goals of empowering communities," said Stephanie A. Bryan, Poarch Creek Indians Tribal Chair and CEO. "Our partnership with Dumas Wesley allows us to amplify our collective impact, providing essential resources to those in need and ensuring that our contributions make a meaningful difference in the lives of others," said Bryan.

Baldwin Family Village News!

After years of dedicated service, Margie Walters, Director of the Baldwin Family Village Director, has made the thoughtful decision to step down from her role to focus on family commitments. While we will miss Margie’s steady leadership and deep compassion, we fully support her in this next chapter and are grateful for the strong foundation she leaves behind.

We’re excited to announce that Hilary Williams, former Case Manager, has stepped into the role of Director of the Baldwin Family Village. Hilary and Margie have built an incredible culture together at the Village, and Hilary is perfectly positioned to continue and expand on that vision. Her deep knowledge of our families and operations makes this a natural and exciting transition.

Adding to this momentum, Genna VanVarden, former House Manager, will be stepping up as our new Case Manager. Having already collaborated closely with Hilary, Genna brings a strong understanding of the role – making her a great fit for the position.

Lastly, we’re excited to welcome back Cathi Parish, a beloved member of our Village team since day one. Cathi will be returning to her role as House Manager. Her presence has always been a vital part of our community, providing a nurturing environment for the women and children in our care.

"It has been an incredible privilege to witness 171 women and children find not only physical and emotional rest, but nourishment support, and hope. Thanks to our generous donors, volunteers and our compassionate community, the Baldwin Family Village has truly become a village. It's humbling to know that families are forever changed because of this opportunity. I’m especially grateful for the amazing staff I have been able to work with both at BFV and Dumas Wesley." ---Margie Walters, former Director of the Baldwin Family Village

The Baldwin Family Village is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant from the Tri-City Community Foundation, an affiliate of The Community Foundation of South Alabama. Funding will support case management and security for the Village.

"Case management is very important to me because it guides my way to success. It keeps me focused and helps me move forward to my end goal – a forever home! I am thankful for the Baldwin Family Village because this program has given me the chance to prove that I am a hard worker and will do anything to live a happy life.”

On August 21, the Baldwin Family Village Foundation held their 4th Annual Donor Appreciation Dinner to recognize and thank the many individuals, faith communities, and businesses that helped continue the success of the Baldwin Family Village.

Donors had the chance to hear from graduates who shared how the Baldwin Family Village transformed their lives. Since the Baldwin Family Village opened its doors, 171 women and children have found refuge at the BFV.

“When I arrived at the Baldwin Family Village, they took me to my room, sat me down, and I just started to cry tears of relief. I made two of the greatest memories of my life at the BFV. I will forever be grateful. I don't know what I would have done had the BFV not opened its doors for me."

At Baldwin Family Village, reliable transportation goes beyond convenience — it’s a vital step toward independence and stability. Thanks to the generosity of Judd and Michelle Gillespie and Ecumenical Ministries, two residents now own vehicles, opening the door to new opportunities and greater self-sufficiency.

One resident shared her gratitude: "I am so thankful to have ‘Ladybug,’ the nickname I've given my car, which was gifted to me by two amazing donors. It was so unexpected and surprising! Having transportation has made such a difference for me — I'm able to keep important appointments, visit my family and friends, and go to the store on my own! Owning a car gives me a sense of confidence and completeness as I embark on my new journey!"

August Highlights

Recently, members of Christ Wesleyan Church’s Wednesday morning life group came together to support an expectant mother residing at the Sybil Smith Family Village. The group donated baby items and supplies to help her prepare for this new chapter.

“Christ Wesleyan Church lives out its mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ by worshipping God, growing together in God’s word, and serving our community," said Sherryle Givens, a member of Christ Wesleyan Church. “Over the years, we have provided food, furniture, bedding, and other essential items for women who were graduating from Dumas Wesley’s transitional housing programs.”

Volunteers are needed to assist with school-age children in Dumas Wesley Community Center's After School Achievement Program. Volunteer activities range from providing homework assistance and reading support to art projects, STEAM activities, and recreational activities.
