Calling All Volunteers!

Dumas Wesley Community Center's transitional housing programs, the Sybil Smith Family Village and the Baldwin Family Village, support women and children experiencing homelessness. The programs provide weekly life skills classes for residents on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Volunteers are needed to lead activities for children while parents attend these vital classes. This volunteer opportunity is from 5:45 p.m.-7:00 p.m. and is suitable for individuals and groups (17+). To learn more call 251-479-0649 or visit www.dumaswesley.org/volunteer.

Supporting our Littlest Learners through STEAM Workshops

For five years, Dr. Martin Frank, Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of South Alabama, has volunteered with the Dumas Wesley Community Center. Dr. Frank’s dynamic approach to teaching has inspired dozens of young learners to embrace the Center’s science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) curriculum. Under Dr. Frank’s leadership, kids in the After School Achievement Program and Summer Recreation Program have enjoyed a variety of hands-on activities that have included: science experiments, interactive physics and kinetic energy demonstrations, math games and career exploration in the STEAM fields.

"Over the years, I've realized that what really matters is the experience of working together to solve a problem, rather than the specifics of the physics itself; I have walked away from many afternoons fulfilled and happy with a smile on my face while remembering the silly discussions that we would have or problems that we would try to work out together. I am grateful to Dumas Wesley for this life-changing opportunity." ---Dr. Martin Frank, After School Achievement Program volunteer

March Highlights

Participants in the Senior Activities for Independent Living (SAIL) Program had the pleasure of welcoming the University of South Alabama Women's Soccer team. Team members led an arts and crafts activity and helped serve meals to seniors.

“In our off-season, we like to prioritize giving back, by spending time volunteering around Mobile. We chose Dumas Wesley because we knew the important mission they strive to provide and believe strongly in following these principles as a team. I know our girls thoroughly enjoyed the time they got to spend with the participants in the SAIL Program. We look forward to fostering this community relationship further in the near future.” ---Ellie Russell, Director of Operations, University of South Alabama Women's Soccer

Dumas Wesley Community Center is the proud recipient of a $20,000 grant from Truist Foundation. Funding will address food insecurities for local youth participating in the Center's After School Achievement Program and Summer Recreation.

In 2024, Dumas Wesley's youth programs served 4,615 meals to school-age children. Londyn, a participant in the After School Achievement Program, shared, “I look forward to coming to the after-school program. One of my favorite activities is when I get to sit down with my friends and enjoy a nice meal together. We laugh and talk about our day. I love that the staff makes sure that no one leaves Dumas Wesley hungry."
